The first question I always try to answer with a live album is: “Do you get something different with this live album compared to the studio albums?” And with this album you certainly do, because for starters, the whole line-up is different. Neal Morse found a band from The Netherlands who were willing and able to learn and perform his music in a very short notice.
Replacing Mike Portnoy surely isn’t easy, even almost impossible but Collin Leijenaar more than gets away with it. He plays almost the same parts as Mike, but to avoid being a copycat he puts something of his own in it, which gives the tracks a whole new perspective.
Elisa Krijgsman is also doing a great job on guitar, although I liked Paul Bielatowicz even more, who accompanied Neal on his latest tour. The solos and difficult parts were brilliantly played as if Elisa was playing on the studio albums too.
Another asset, on this album, is the voice of Jessica Koomen, who with her backing vocals brings an extra that wasn’t on the studio recordings, especially in ‘In The Fire’ and during the long medley on the end. Wilco van Esschoten on bass also gave a super performance and also proved his voice was adding something to the songs.
Finally, there’s Henk Doest on keyboards, who apparently comes from a more jazz oriented world which make the keyboard solos sound a bit different. I’m not really into jazz, so I prefer the original recordings, but there are probably fans who will like Henk’s versions.
And of course there’s Neal Morse, singing, playing keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars and spreading his religion. I respect everyone’s believes, but I don’t like it when they want to spread it during a concert. Luckily he’s doing it only twice. There’s a religious speech during “Entrance” and in “The Flesh and the Spirit”.
And he also brings his son Will on stage. A great sentimental moment for Neal and his son and the audience during the gigs, but on the live CD, it doesn’t sound good. Will is clearly not the singer his father is and ruins a bit “The Man’s Gone” and “Cradle to the Grave” by singing out of pitch. It depends how sentimental you are and how quickly you will need your handkerchief. ;-)
It’s a pity for the people who bought this live album during his last tour, because this newer version on Mascot Records has got a better mastering and contains an extra medley of 18 minutes!!!
The whole “?” album and parts of “One” are included in this recording of the show at the Columbia Club in Berlin on June 14, 2006. Nothing seems to have been changed or added, so you get the real thing as it was on the evening.
Conclusion: I like this live album very much, because of the newer visions with the new musicians, but I rather skip the parts with his speeches and the tracks with his son. But that still leaves a lot of good music, because the whole album lasts 138 minutes!!



De eerste vraag die ik altijd probeer te beantwoorden met een live-album is: "Krijg je iets anders met dit live-album in vergelijking met de studio albums?" En met dit album krijg je dat zeker, want om te beginnen is de ganse bezetting van de groep veranderd. Neal Morse vond muzikanten in Nederland, die bereid en in staat waren om zijn muziek op zeer korte termijn te leren en uit te voeren.
Het vervangen van Mike Portnoy is zeker niet gemakkelijk, zelfs bijna onmogelijk, maar Collin Leijenaar doet dat meer dan behoorlijk. Hij speelt bijna dezelfde partijen als Mike, maar om te vermijden dat hij alleen maar kopieert stopt hij er toch iets van zichzelf in waardoor de nummers een geheel nieuw perspectief krijgen.
Elisa Krijgsman doet geweldig werk op gitaar, maar ik vond Paul Bielatowicz, die Neal Morse begeleidde tijdens zijn laatste toer, nog beter. De solo’s en moeilijke gitaarpartijen werden door Elisa vlekkeloos gespeeld, alsof hij ze zelf had ingespeeld op de studio albums.
Een andere troef is de stem van Jessica Koomen, die met haar backing vocals iets extra toevoegt dat we niet kennen van de studio opnames, vooral tijdens 'In The Fire' en de lange medley op het einde. Wilco van Esschoten op bas levert ook een super prestatie en ook zijn stem levert een mooie bijdrage aan de songs.
Tenslotte is er Henk Doest op keyboards, die schijnbaar afkomstig is van een meer jazz georiënteerde wereld, waardoor de solo’s anders klinken. Ik ben geen grote jazz liefhebber, dus geef ik de voorkeur aan de originele opnames, maar er zullen ongetwijfeld ook fans zijn die liever de versies van Henk horen.
En natuurlijk is er Neal Morse. De man zingt erop los, speelt keyboards als de beste en levert bijdragen op elektrische en akoestische gitaar en werkt ook aan de verspreiding van zijn geloof. Ik heb respect voor ieders mening, maar ik houd er niet van als die verspreid wordt tijdens een concert. Gelukkig doet hij het slechts tweemaal, maar toch is dat tweemaal teveel. Je bent gewaarschuwd: tijdens “Entrance” en "The Flesh and the Spirit” krijg je een religieuze toespraak. ;-)
En hij brengt ook zijn zoon Will op het podium. Een groot sentimenteel moment voor Neal en zijn zoon en het publiek tijdens de optredens, maar op de live-cd klinkt dat voor geen meter. Will is duidelijk geen zangtalent zoals zijn vader en helpt "The Man's Gone" en "Cradle To The Grave" grotendeels om zeep door vals te zingen. Het hangt ervan af hoe sentimenteel je bent en hoe snel je je zakdoek moet bovenhalen. ;-)
Jammer voor de mensen die dit album reeds kochten tijdens zijn laatste toer, maar de nieuwere versie via Mascot Records is veel beter gemasterd en klinkt veel beter en bevat een extra medley van 18 minuten!
Het volledige "?" Album en delen van "One" worden uitgevoerd tijdens deze opname van de show in de Columbia Club in Berlijn op 14 juni 2006. Er is niets veranderd aan de opnames en niks werd toegevoegd, zodat je de “real thing” te horen krijgt.
Conclusie: Het is een goed live album, vooral door de nieuwere visies met de nieuwe muzikanten, maar ik sla toch liever de stukken met zijn toespraken en de nummers met zijn zoon over. Maar dat laat nog een hoop goede muziek over want de 2 Cd’s duren samen 138 minuten!!!
