P:O:B (Pedestrians or Blue) is a Norwegian group around guitarist Torfinn Sirnes and singer and keyboardist John Støle, Rudolf Fredly was responsible for the bass lines, it seems at first sight not clear who ultimately will be the drummer of the group. Although Daniel Flores (Mind's Eye) performs on no less than 9 songs and furthermore also accounted for the mix, it seems that Harald Levang will become the drummer of the band. 'Crossing over' is the real debut of the group, after the press well received their EP in 2005. Despite the critical acclaim and some interesting offers, they still prefer their own label Fishfarm Records. The production is in the hands of Mika Jussila, not the least because he was already working for Nightwish and Masterplan.

The opener Father & Son puts you a little bit on the wrong foot by a bombastic pipe organ introduction, followed by some heavy metal guitars. And yet this is the trademark of P:O:B : a cocktail of progressive (vintage) rock, alternative rock, neoprog, AOR and metal. It may seem too many styles for one album, but these guys know to deal with it, without falling into too complex music. Most of the songs often sound very catchy like Promises, with a good management, these boys may also succeed in the mainstream circuit. "The Garden" has a pleasant sounding chorus (happy metal), while also often influences of Dream Theater and Queensryche emerge. Vocals are also excellent, Johannes Stole has a pleasant and well-balanced voice, he seems the only singer on the album, while often vocals in harmony can be heard, for live performances they have to look for a solution. They call themselves Toto amongst their influences, on the instrumental The Line it becomes clear why, while the electric piano in the middle part reminds of Dream Theater. It is noteworthy that, after the last song, the average time is around 4 minutes. Therefore, the numbers are never boring, although there is often a certain amount of complexity behind the compositions, like 'World of Things ", for example, that shows the same kind of virtuosity as Pain of Salvation.

Although the group primarily builds on the strong compositions and less on technical difficulties, there are also moments of great guitar playing like Daniel Palmquist in 'The other line. " "How much more than a dream" is the only ballad, completely in AOR-style and sung in an very emotional way. In contrast with this ballad, "The altar of Love” sounds a lot heavier, progressive metal with a touch of Black Sabbath. And to prove that they can also play in a progressive way, they end up with a true epic with all the known ingredients (with pace and mood changes). Needless to discuss this issue, because "Out of the Rain" is a perfect summary of the rest of the album, sometimes the vocals here reminds of A.C.T.

Without doubt this is one of the better albums of 2007, the voice of Stole and the beautiful, straightforward arrangements in an excellent production will appeal to many music lovers. Maybe they should really look for a prestigious label to force the ultimate breakthrough.

Alhoewel Daniel Flores (Mind’s Eye) op niet minder dan 9 nummers op uitmuntende manier drumt en daarenboven ook instond voor de mix, lijkt het erop dat Harald Levang de vaste drummer van dienst wordt. ‘Crossing over’ is eigenlijk het echte debuut van de groep, na de door de pers goed ontvangen EP uit 2005. Ondanks de goede kritieken en enkele interessante aanbiedingen hebben ze toch nog altijd gekozen voor hun eigen label Fishfarm Records. De productie is in handen van Mika Jussila, niet de minste want hij was ook al werkzaam bij Nightwish en Masterplan.

De opener Father&Son zet je een beetje op het verkeerde been door een bombastische pijporgelintro, gevolgd door een nogal metal klinkend nummer met zware gitaren. En toch is dit tegelijk het handelsmerk van P:O:B: : een cocktail van progressieve (vintage) rock, alternatieve rock, neoprog, A.O.R. en metal. Het lijkt wel wat veel genres voor één album, maar deze jongens weten dit op een onnavolgbare wijze te serveren, zonder te vervallen in te complexe muziek. En op de koop toe klinken de nummers vaak zelfs catchy zoals bijvoorbeeld Promises, met een goed management zouden deze jongens ook in het mainstream circuit kunnen meedraaien. ‘The Garden’ heeft een aangenaam in het oor klinkend refrein (happy Metal), terwijl ook vaak invloeden van Dream Theater en Queensryche te ontwaren zijn. Vocaal is dit ook puik werk, Johannes Stole heeft een aangename en vaste stem, hij lijkt de enige zanger op het album, terwijl heel vaak harmonieuze samenzang te horen is, voor live-optredens zal dus naar een oplossing moeten gezocht worden. Zelf noemen ze Toto ook als één van hun invloeden, op de instrumental The Line is ook duidelijk waarom, terwijl de elektrische piano in het middenstuk opnieuw aan Dream Theater herinnert. Opmerkelijk is dat, op het laatste nummer na, de gemiddelde tijdsduur rond de 4 minuten draait. Hierdoor gaan de nummers ook niet vervelen, alhoewel er toch vaak een zekere complexiteit achter de composities schuilt, ‘World of Things’ heeft bijvoorbeeld die virtuositeit van een Pain of Salvation.

Alhoewel de groep het voornamelijk van de sterke composities moet hebben en minder van technische hoogstandjes, zijn er bij momenten ook leuke gitaarsoli te horen zoals Danniel Palmquist in ‘The other line’. ‘How much more than a dream’ is de enige ballad, compleet in AOR-stijl en zeer gevoelig gezongen. In contrast met deze ballad is ‘The altar of Love’ dan een pak steviger, progressieve Metal met een vleugje Black Sabbath. En om te bewijzen dat ze ook echt progressieve wegen kunnen inslaan, eindigen ze met een ware epic met de gekende ingrediënten (tempo- en sfeerwisselingen). Onnodig dit nummer te bespreken, want ‘Out of the Rain’ is een perfecte samenvatting van de rest van het album, misschien toch nog even opmerken dat vocaal soms ook aan A.C.T. kan gerefereerd worden.

Zonder twijfel is dit één van de betere albums van 2007, de stem van Stole en de prachtige, complexloze arrangementen in een uitstekende productie zullen bij heel wat muziekliefhebbers in de smaak vallen. Misschien moeten ze toch maar een prestigieus label zoeken, om de uiteindelijke doorbraak te forceren.
