Busy bee Steven Wilson isn’t very DVD minded, I presume, because there aren’t that many DVD’s of Porcupine Tree and this is the first one of Blackfield. Blackfield is his side-project he started with Aviv Geffen, an Israeli rock musician. This side project is growing fast and has a lot of fans and could be well on its way to equal or even surpass Porcupine Tree in popularity.
The DVD was recorded in New York, but it could have been anywhere on the tour, because the set list is the same as the rest of the tour. So if you saw them, this package is a perfect tour souvenir.
The DVD starts brilliantly with Tomer Z on drums, playing the rhythm for “Once”, while the other musicians come on stage and one by one plug in their instrument and start to play along. A great song to open and end a gig. (It’s played again as an encore)
As usual, with perfectionist Steven Wilson, it’s an awesome product, everything perfect in balance, no annoying video effects or overlaps and filmed with sufficient cameras to have enough variation. (Good work, Lasse Hoile) Only the light show could have been a little bit less sober. But of course this simplicity and the smaller club entourage helps to focus on the essentials of the band: the lyrics, the brilliant song writing, the instrumentation,… The vocals are sometimes a bit too silent, but maybe that’s better in the 5.1 surround mix, because I don’t have a surround installation to evaluate that part of the DVD.
Aviv isn’t always perfectly in tune, especially during “Pain” but he makes up for it during “Glow”, a brilliant solo vocal performance accompanying himself on the piano. , followed by a cover of Alana Morisette's ‘Thankyou”, performed by Aviv and Steven.
Besides the gig (82 minutes), you can also watch the three original promo videos for “Hello”, “Pain” and “Blackfield” as bonus material.
It says NTSC on the box, but it played all right in my player, so there shouldn’t be any problem, but maybe best to try it out. (According to Amazon, it’s for all regions).
Along with the “Arriving Somewhere” DVD from Porcupine Tree, this “Blackfield Live” is one of the best DVD’s in my concert collection.



Bezige bij Steven Wilson heeft het niet zo met DVD’s, want er bestaan niet veel opnames van Porcupine Tree en dit is de eerste van Blackfield. Blackfield is het nevenproject dat Steven opstartte met Aviv Geffen, een Israëlische rock muzikant, die in zijn land heel populair is. Dit project groeit enorm vlug en heeft al heel wat fans bijeengeschaard en is goed op weg om Porcupine Tree te evenaren of zelfs voorbij te steken in populariteit.
De DVD werd opgenomen in New York, maar het kon om het even waar tijdens de toer gebeurd zijn want de setlijst komt overeen met de rest van de optredens. Dus, als je hen aan het werk zag, dan is dit een perfect toer souvenir.
De show opent prachtig met Tomer Z op drum, die het ritme van “Once” begint te spelen. Ondertussen betreden de andere muzikanten, rustig het podium en pluggen hun instrument in om het wonderlijke “Once” mee te spelen. Een prachtig nummer om een optreden te openen en af te sluiten. (het wordt nogmaals gespeeld tijdens de bisnummers)
Zoals altijd, als het een werk van perfectionist Steven Wilson betreft, is het een meesterwerk geworden, alles perfect in balans, geen vervelende video effecten of overlappende beelden en gefilmd met voldoende camera’s om voldoende variatie te verkrijgen. (prachtig werk, Lasse Hoile). Enkel de lichtshow mocht iets minder sober. Natuurlijk helpt deze eenvoud en het kleinere club entourage om te focussen op de essenties van de groep: de teksten, de briljante song composities, de instrumentatie, … Enkel de zang is af en toe iets te zacht, maar dat is misschien beter in de 5.1 surround mix, want ik heb niet een dergelijke installatie om dat aspect van de DVD te beoordelen.
Aviv is niet altijd toonvast, vooral tijdens het begin van “Pain” maar hij maakt alles ruimschoots weer goed tijdens “Glow”, een uitstekende solo uitvoering, zichzelf begeleidend op piano, gevolgd door een cover van Alana Morisette's ‘Thankyou”, uitgevoerd door Aviv en Steven.
Naast het optreden (82 minuten), krijg je ook nog de drie originele promo video’s van “Hello”, “Pain” en “Blackfield” als bonus materiaal.
De doos (een Amerikaanse plexiglazen box) vermeld dat de DVD in NTSC formaat is, maar het schijfje gaf geen problemen in mijn speler. (misschien toch beter even uitproberen) (volgens Amazon is het ‘all regions’)
Samen met de “Arriving Somewhere” DVD van Porcupine Tree, is deze “Blackfield Live” één van de beste Dvd’s in mijn concert verzameling!!!
