The Swedish label Progress Records has spoiled us the last few years with excellent releases of young, promising groups from Scandinavia. The level of groups such as Brother Ape, Magic Pie, Liquid Scarlet and other Beardfish is above the average of what is happening on the current market of the progressive rock. The expectations were very high for the debut of Soniq Circus, another Swedish group that combines vintage progressive rock with influences from metal and hard rock. Unfortunately, this time I can not be even enthusiastic, not that this album would be a weak one but it sounds often a bit inconsistent. Yet this debut album starts with a nice symphonic instrumental in pure neoprog-style, the musical potential is certainly present. Many tracks also contain strong passages, but are then alternated with poppy or hard rock influences, after which the composition gets a little bit lost (eg Welcome). The drummer has apparently roots in the metal-genre, he takes often too full advantage of his double bass drums. This gives you some sort of power progressive rock with a lot of keyboards (moog and mellotron), the label itself compares them with groups such as ACT, King Crimson and Saga, I would rather place it in the style of Magic Pie and Beardfish, but however quoted a stepladder lower than previous groups. And yet I think this group has something to offer, in a song like Bright Future (who knows?) they show on the basis of a number of pure heavy rock riffs combined with fat Hammond that they really do have opportunities, both musically and vocally is sounds okay. The arrangements are still a little too inconsistent to be captivating on all tracks, but I will certainly watch for the successor to their debut album.



Het Zweedse label Progress Records heeft ons de laatste jaren verwend met uitstekende releases van jonge, veelbelovende groepen uit Scandinavië. Het niveau van groepen als Brother Ape, Magic Pie, Liquid Scarlet en andere Beardfish ligt boven het gemiddelde van wat er op de markt van de progressieve rock tegenwoordig te vinden is. De verwachtingen waren dan ook hooggespannen bij het debuut van Soniq Circus, opnieuw een Zweedse groep die vintage progressieve rock combineert met invloeden uit metal en hard rock. Jammer genoeg kan ik deze keer niet even enthousiast zijn, niet dat dit een zwak album zou zijn maar het klinkt vaak wat chaotisch. Nochtans start dit debuutalbum met een leuke symfonische instrumental in pure neoprog-stijl, het muzikale potentieel is zeker aanwezig. Vele tracks bevatten ook sterke passages, maar worden dan afgewisseld met poppy of hard rock invloeden, waardoor de compositie een beetje zoek raakt (bijvoorbeeld in Welcome). De drummer heeft blijkbaar roots in het metal-genre, hij maakt echter vaak iets te gretig gebruik van de dubbele basdrum. Hierdoor krijg je wel een soort van power progressieve rock met heel veel keyboards (moog en mellotron), het label zelf vergelijkt ze met groepen als A.C.T., King Crimson en Saga, ik zou ze eerder in de stijl van Magic Pie en Beardfish plaatsen, maar dan toch een trapje lager dan hoger geciteerde groepen. En toch denk ik dat deze groep iets te bieden heeft, in een nummer als Bright Future (who knows?) illustreren ze aan de hand van een aantal pure heavy rock riffs in combinatie met vettige Hammond dat ze heus wel mogelijkheden hebben, zowel muzikaal als vocaal zit het wel goed. Voorlopig zijn de arrangementen echter nog wat te inconsistent om te beklijven, maar ik hou alvast de opvolger van hun debuutalbum nauwlettend in het oog.
