Swedish Paatos speaks of a true rebirth with ‘Breathing’. You can say that. In April 2009 Stefan Dimle and Johan Wallén, two founding members, suddenly left the band. Not earlier than December 2009 a new bassist Rockis was announced. On top of that they really took all the time in the world to work on new songs; that’s why Paatos sounds really spirited and refreshed on ‘Breathing’. Naturally the clear voice of Petronella Nettermalm still reigns, but the music has become more modern and with the departure of Wallén there are still keyboards, but not a featuring mellotron orgy. It has been replaced by an atmospheric entirety of all kinds of instruments.

‘Gone’ is the opening track on ‘Breathing’ and it is post-rock with momentum and tasteful, laidback vocals. In addition it is very fetching and catchy, that’s why vocal-lines soon haunt you. No wonder they made a video clip for this strong track! Mark the intriguing bass intermezzo. Nowadays Paatos moves towards all kinds of musical directions, they wander through the whole spectrum of modern progressiveness. One might call it alternative rock, but the beautiful guitar sounds with dreamy vocals and surely the keyboard spot in ‘Fading Out’ will strongly appeal to progressive rock fans. Above all it is atmospheric music, without ever growing real heavy, but that’s not necessary in this case. As singer, Petronella sometimes reminds me of Bjork. I know that’s a remark you can often read, but in the jazz-tinged ‘No More Rollercoaster’ you simply cannot deny it. This song includes an amazing groovy guitar solo. The title track ‘Breathing’ is marvellous! The beginning with quiescent guitars, the storytelling vocals with an undercurrent of darkness and threat, the vigorous instrumental part: it all proves their skills and names like Deus, The Walkabouts or Nick Cave crossed my mind from time to time. The melancholic ‘Precious’ is also one of the highlights. Fragile is the voice, yet it has a huge expressiveness. Even the restless rhythms in occluding track ‘Over & Out’ cannot change the fact that this album stands proud as a beacon of tranquillity in this hectic world. The Stockholm based band celebrates this rebirth with a Polish tour with Riverside and Pineapple Thief, but hopefully we can welcome them in our areas again in autumn.



Het Zweedse Paatos spreekt over een ware wedergeboorte met ‘Breathing’. Dat kan je wel stellen. In april 2009 verlieten plots Stefan Dimle en Johan Wallén, twee leden van het eerste uur, de band. Pas in december 2009 werd de nieuwe bassist Rockis aangekondigd. Men nam bovendien ruim te tijd om te sleutelen aan nieuwe songs, zodat Paatos op ‘Breathing’ fris en bevlogen klinkt. Natuurlijk is er de heldere stem van Petronella Nettermalm, maar de muziek is veel moderner geworden en met het vertrek van Wallén zijn er nog wel toetsen, maar mellotron heeft plaats moeten maken voor een atmosferisch geheel.

‘Gone’ is het eerste nummer op ‘Breathing’ en het is stuwende post-rock met sfeervolle zang. Bovendien is het erg pakkend en toegankelijk, zodat de zanglijnen zich al vlug in je achterhoofd nestelen. Geen wonder dat er al een videoclip gemaakt is voor deze sterke track. Let op het intrigerende basintermezzo. Paatos beweegt zich nu muzikaal op vele gebieden. Men kan het alternatieve rock noemen, maar de mooie gitaarmuziek met dromerige vocalen en vooral de keyboard spot van ‘Fading Out’ zal progressieve rockfans sterk aanspreken. Het is vooral sfeermuziek, zonder ooit heavy te worden, maar dat is ook niet nodig. Als zangeres doet Petronella me wel eens aan Bjork denken. Dit is een opmerking die meermaals valt, maar in het jazzgetinte ‘No More Rollercoaster’ kan je er niet omheen. Deze song bevat wel een vette gitaarsolo. Het titelnummer ‘Breathing’ is prachtig! Het begin met kalme gitaarklanken, de verhalende zang met een onderhuidse dreiging, het energieke instrumentale stuk: het getuigt van grote kunde waarbij namen als Deus, The Walkabouts en Nick Cave even in mijn achterhoofd passeren. Het weemoedige ‘Precious’ reken ik ook tot de hoogtepunten. Fragiel en breekbaar is de zang, maar toch met een enorme zeggingskracht. Zelfs de onrustige ritmes in afsluiter ‘Over & Out’ kunnen niet veranderen dat dit album een baken van rust is in deze hectische wereld. De band uit Stockholm viert deze wedergeboorte met een tour door Polen met Riverside en Pineapple Thief, maar in het najaar kunnen we ze hopelijk ook in onze contreien verwelkomen.
