Most of you will know Beardfish by now. They toured with The Tangent, Ritual and Pain Of Salvation and if you missed them live, you surely have one of their albums. And if you don’t and you are a genuine progressive rock fan, you have to get to know them. Their newest release “Mammoth” is as good a start as any to get acquainted with their music.
Their music is overflowing with references to all the classic progressive rock bands you can name, as there are King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Camel, Genesis, Frank Zappa,… which doesn’t mean there’s no variation on the album. “The Platform” is based on a hard rock riff. “And The Stone…” is an epic track with even some grunts. There are some more poppy tracks. Akakabotu is a jazzy song, with the necessary sax solo and “Outside / Inside” is a short piano track. As you see, every track reveals something new.
The musicians are just brilliant. Founder Rikard Sjöblom is playing magical Hammond music and is the lead singer, who’s voice is sounding better by the album. David’s guitar solo’s are lifting the tracks to a higher level and he certainly knows how to play the synthesizer.
The rhythm section (Robert and Magnus) is doing everything you expect them to do in this progressive style and even more.
This album is heavier than their previous work, but it seems a bit easier to digest. The songs are mostly based on a returning riff which is very recognizable, although they are not afraid to play some totally different parts in between, but they always return to the starting riff.
The mammoth are extinct, but bands like this are still around. And we have to help them to survive by buying their stuff.



De meesten onder jullie zullen Beardfish al kennen. Ze toerden met The Tangent, Ritual en Pain Of Salvation en als je ze gemist tijdens die optredens, dan bezit je zeker al één van hun albums. Indien je dat niet hebt en je bent een echte progressieve rock fan, dan moet je ze zeker leren kennen. Hun nieuwste release "Mammoth" is de perfecte start om kennis te maken met hun muziek.
Hun muziek staat bol van verwijzingen naar alle klassieke progressieve rock bands die je kent, zoals daar zijn King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Camel, Genesis, Frank Zappa, ... wat niet betekent dat het album niet gevarieerd is. "The Platform" is gebaseerd op een hard rock riff. "And the Stone ..." is een episch nummer met zelfs enkele grunts. Er zijn ook enkele poppy nummers. Akakabotu is een jazzy nummer, met de onmisbare sax solo en "Outside / Inside"is een kort pianonummer. Zoals je ziet, elke track onthult iets nieuws.
De muzikanten zijn gewoon briljant. Oprichter Rikard Sjöblom speelt magische Hammond muziek en is de zanger, wiens stem ieder album beter klinkt. David's gitaarsolo’s tillen de nummers naar een hoger niveau en hij bewijst dat hij zijn mannetje staat op een synthesizer.
De ritmesectie (Robert en Magnus) doet alles wat je verwacht in deze progressieve stijl en zelfs meer.
Dit album is zwaarder dan hun vorig werk en het lijkt een beetje gemakkelijker te verteren. De songs zijn veelal gebaseerd op een terugkerende riff die zeer herkenbaar, maar ze hebben geen schrik om er onderweg van af te stappen, om later terug te keren naar die beginrif.
De mammoet is uitgestorven, maar groepen zoals Beardfish zijn er nog steeds. En wij moeten hen helpen om te overleven door het kopen van hun albums.
