The band is called Jolly, but on the cover of the album it says “The incredible Jolly”, and that’s certainly not an understatement. From the first sound I heard of this album, I was addicted. But if I believe the band, this addiction was caused by their way of manipulating our brain with their music. “Under the guise of rock music, JOLLY has devised a therapeutic auditory experience scientifically designed to bring the brain to a state of pure happiness. By combining sophisticated arrangements, ambient textures, aggressive dynamics, and infectious melodies with binaural brain wave technology, a new medium is born.” This sounds a bit scary, but anyway, it seems to be working or maybe it’s just an excellent album? ;-)
This is top notch, by times rather heavy, progressive rock (e.g. “Ends where it Starts”, “The Pattern”) combined with a hit potentiality in other tracks. (e.g. “Joy”)
Anadale is not the best vocalist I know, but his voice blends wonderfully well with this kind of music. Drummer Anthony Rondinone is one of the main attractions on the album, playing very steady rhythms intertwined with fascinating breaks.
Two superfluous little tracks “Guidance” one and two, apparently split the album in two parts. The second half still has the heavy progressive rock tracks, but there are some ambient and acoustic parts to add some ambient feeling to the rather dark atmosphere.
Sometimes it feels like a mix of Porcupine Tree and Tool.

And if you get addicted to Jolly, there’s good news, because this is only part one! What a jolly good way of feeling happy!!!



De band heet Jolly, maar op de cover van het album staat er "The Incredible Jolly", en dat is zeker geen understatement. Vanaf de eerste passage van dit album, was ik verslaafd. Maar als ik de band moet geloven, wordt deze verslaving veroorzaakt door hun manipulatie van ons brein met hun muziek. "Onder het mom van de rockmuziek, heeft JOLLY een therapeutische auditieve ervaring ontworpen om de hersenen wetenschappelijk tot een staat van puur geluk te brengen. Door het combineren van uitgekiende arrangementen, ambient texturen, agressieve dynamiek en aanstekelijke melodieën met stereofonische “brainwave” technologie, is een nieuw medium geboren." Dit klinkt een beetje eng, maar toch, het lijkt te werken of misschien is het gewoon een uitstekend album? ;-)
Dit is progressieve rock van de bovenste plank, die soms hevig uit de hoek kan komen, (bv. "Ends where it Starts”, "The Pattern") gecombineerd met een hit potentieel in andere nummers. (Bijvoorbeeld "Joy")
Anadale is niet de beste zanger die ik ken, maar zijn stem past wonderwel bij dit soort muziek. Drummer Anthony Rondinone is één van de belangrijkste attracties op het album, met zijn zeer stabiele ritmes verweven met fascinerende ‘breaks’.
Twee kleine overbodige tracks "Guidance" één en twee, splitsen het album in twee delen. De tweede helft bevat nog steeds de zware progressieve rock nummers, maar er zijn een aantal ambient en akoestische stukken die een ambient gevoel toevoegen aan de vrij duistere sfeer.
Soms lijkt het wel een mix van Porcupine Tree met Tool.

En als je verslaafd zou raken aan Jolly, dan is er goed nieuws, want dit is slechts een deel één! What a jolly good way of feeling happy!!!
