Experimenting is what this band likes the most. Their name is already part of the experiment. Calling your band “… And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead” isn’t the most evident choice, but it’s working because they already release their seventh album since 1998. But everybody calls them Trail of Dead, which I will also do during the rest of this review. They also experiment with their music, although they stay on the safe side by using a mix of existing styles.
They come closest to Foo Fighters with a lot of seventies sounds. Sometimes I hear The Beatles, sometimes Pink Floyd and occasionally bands like Rush, but they say they are influenced by Kraftwerk, which I don’t really hear in their music, except in the chaos of “The Fairlight Pendant”.
Often, mixing different styles the right way delivers a new sound. A sound of which you get the feeling you know it and yet you don’t. And that’s the feeling I get with this band.
Often tracks start with a rif that reminds me of some other band, for example the opening of “Pure Radio Cosplay” reminded me of The Rolling Stones, but change into some chaotic and yet melodic tracks that I can only describe as genuine but sometimes heavy progressive rock.
Especially the voice of Conrad has a sixties-seventies sound, sometimes with a special effect, like in “Cover the Days like a Tidal Wave”, to give it a ‘Flash and the Pan’ “Hey Saint Peter” feeling.
The previous album “The Century of Self” contained a lot of piano, which has almost disappeared on this newest release and is mostly replaced by heavy guitars and synth sounds.
The title “Tao of the Dead” has been chosen because the lyrics are inspired the Tao Te Tching, a Chinese book from 600 BC.
The production is good but a bit on the dark side. The last track seems to have gotten a different production or mastering, because it sounds louder. It’s the most difficult piece of the album. “Tao of the Dead Part two” contains sixteen minutes of hard to digest progressive rock for advanced listeners. ;-)
If you like to discover some new paths of progressive rock paved with references to older bands, you just discovered a new band to add to your collection.


Experimenteren is waar deze groep het meest van houdt. Hun naam is al een onderdeel van het experiment. De naam "... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead" is niet de meest evidente keuze, maar het werkt want ze zijn reeds aan hun zevende album toe sinds 1998.
Maar iedereen noemt ze Trail of Dead en dat zal ik ook doen tijdens de rest van deze recensie. Ze experimenteren ook met hun muziek, maar ze spelen het veilig door te werken met een mix van bestaande stijlen.
Ze komen het dichtst bij Foo Fighters maar dan met veel ‘seventies’ klanken. Soms hoor ik The Beatles, soms Pink Floyd en af en toe bands als Rush, maar ze zeggen te zijn beïnvloed door Kraftwerk, wat ik niet echt hoor in hun muziek, behalve in de chaos van "The Fairlight Pendant".
Vaak, het mengen van verschillende stijlen op de juiste manier levert een nieuw geluid. Een geluid waarvan je het gevoel dat je weet dat en toch heb je niet. En dat is het gevoel dat ik krijg met deze band.
Vaak beginnen de nummers met een rif, die mij doet denken aan een andere groep, bijvoorbeeld de opening van "Pure Radio Cosplay" doet me denken aan The Rolling Stones, maar dat verandert meestal vlug in chaotische en toch melodieuze nummers die ik alleen kan omschrijven als pure, maar soms zware progressieve rock.
Vooral de stem van Conrad heeft een jaren zestig-zeventig geluid, soms met een speciaal effect, zoals in "Cover the Days like a Tidal Wave", wat dan een 'Flash and the Pan' "Hey Saint Peter" gevoel geeft.
Het vorige album "The Century of Self" bevatte veel piano, die nu bijna verdwenen is en die meestal wordt vervangen door zware gitaren en synthesizer geluiden.
De titel "Tao of the Dead" is gekozen omdat de teksten zijn geïnspireerd op de Tao Te Tching, een Chinees boek uit 600 v. Chr.
De productie is goed, maar een beetje aan de donkere kant. Het laatste nummer lijkt een andere productie of mastering te hebben gekregen, want het klinkt luider. Het is het moeilijkste stuk van het album. "The Tao of the Dead part two" bevat zestien minuten moeilijk te verteren progressieve rock voor gevorderde luisteraars. ;-)
Als u graag een aantal nieuwe paden van de progressieve rock, geplaveid met verwijzingen naar oudere bands, bewandelt dan heb je weer een groep om aan je verzameling toe te voegen.
