I know this will sound like a cliché, but progressive records need a lot of auditions to get into and the more you need, the better the reward afterwards. And “Missa Atropos” breaks every record of being hard to get to know. I never needed that length of time to fully appreciate an album and never was it that rewarding.
Since “Night”, Gazpacho has been writing concept albums. This one is about a man who retreats in a lighthouse to write a mass for Atropos, one of the three Greek fates. You can read more about this concept in an interview I had with Thomas (keyboards) and Lars (drums). (asap)
As usual, the sound of Gazpacho is perfect. Every little sound is audible and every piece has a function, you discover one by one while listening. It is so relaxing. They never get to a higher gear, but you don’t want them to. I don’t think there are a lot of bands who can get away with that. Once you get to know the record better, you even discover that they skip to a higher gear after all, which apparently wasn’t there the first time. For example, the last part of “Missa Atropos” contains a rather heavy piece. Together with “Defense Mechanism”, “Snail” and “River”, this title track is amongst my favourite tracks. But there are no weak moments on the whole album.
Jan-Henrik has a beautiful voice, perfect for this kind of music, which makes me think of Muse and Radiohead. There’s a special timbre in his voice which delivers two different sounds in the lower and higher parts of the tracks.
The new drummer Lars proves that even in quiet tracks, there’s a whole lot of drumming to do. Mikael is still delivering the mandolin and violin parts which are so vital for this Gazpacho music and Jon-Arne plays the guitar parts, subtle on the right moments and coming out when needed. Thomas has a whole library of keyboard sounds to help build the soundscapes and Kristian plays the supporting necessary bass.
This is a band, which is still growing and has a fast growing fan base. I hardly know which to choose as their best as “Night”, “Tick-Tock” and “Missa Atropos” are all brilliant.



Ik weet dat mijn volgende stelling als een cliché zal klinken, maar het is nu eenmaal zo dat progressieve albums een groot aantal beluisteringen vergen om ze te leren kennen en hoe meer er nodig zijn, hoe groter de beloning nadien is. En “Missa Atropos” breekt alle records als het gaat om moeilijkheidsgraad. Nog nooit had ik zoveel tijd nodig om een album volledig te appreciëren en nog nooit was de beloning van dergelijke grootteorde.
Sedert “Night”, schrijft Gazpacho concept albums. Dit nieuwste album gaat over een man die zich terugtrekt in een vuurtoren om een mis te schrijven voor Atropos, één van de drie Griekse Schikgodinnen. Zoals altijd is het geluid van Gazpacho perfect. Elk detail is duidelijk hoorbaar en elk stukje heeft zijn functie die je één voor één ontdekt tijdens het luisteren. Het is zo rustgevend. Ze gaan nooit over tot een hogere versnelling, maar dat wil je ook helemaal niet. Ik denk niet dat ik dit bij veel groepen zou aanvaarden. Eens je het album wat beter kent, ontdek je zelfs dat ze toch af en toe tot een hogere versnelling overgaan, alsof dit nog niet zo was toen je het album voor het eerst draaide. “Missa Atropos” bevat bijvoorbeeld een heviger einde. Samen met “Defense Mechanism”, “Snail” en “River” behoort dit titelnummer tot mijn favorieten. Maar er zijn geen zwakke momenten op de CD.
Jan-Henrik heeft een prachtige stem, die perfect past bij dit soort muziek en die me doet denken aan Muse en Radiohead. Er zit een speciale klank in zijn stem die twee verschillende stemmen levert alsof de hogere en lagere stukken door iemand anders gezongen zijn.
De nieuwe drummer Lars bewijst dat er, zelfs in kalme muziek, heel wat drumwerk te doen valt. Mikael levert nog altijd de mandoline en viool escapades die vitaal zijn voor deze Gazpacho muziek en Jon-Arne speelt de gitaarstukken, subtiel op de goede momenten en naar buiten tredend indien nodig. Thomas heeft een ganse klankenbibliotheek op zijn keyboards om de juiste soundscapes op te bouwen en Kristian is de ondersteunende bassist van dienst.
Dit is een groep die nog steeds met grote stappen vooruit gaat en die een vlug groeiende groep fans heeft. Ik vind het enorm moeilijk om het beste te kiezen uit hun drie laatste albums, want “Night”, “Tick-Tock” en “Missa Atropos” zijn gewoon briljant.
