Eloy, the German prog icon for many progressive rock fans releases a box with 2 DVD’s spanning their 40 year career. It’s a must have for these fans, because there is not much material available of Eloy on DVD. But it could have been so much more. The first DVD is a documentary with interviews about all their records and music. The clips that are scarcely included are way too short. It’s an interesting documentary, but one you don’t watch twice, because of all the talking. Luckily they included English subtitles, so non German fans can also understand it. Also included is a picture gallery.
The second DVD is a collection of clips. I’m not really pleased with the song choices, but that’s an opinion, of course. Most of the clips seem to be taken from television shows, which delivers a static performance with almost no light show. The sound and images of the oldest clips are out of sync. But still it’s an interesting overview of what they have achieved during these 40 years. It’s also enjoyable to see the band change during the years. Not only the musicians get older but also the music style changes throughout their career.
The bonus tracks are the most interesting of all. These four tracks are taken from a club performance and sound much more live than all the rest.
Highlights are of course the tracks from their two Oceans albums but the rest of the material is also something that every progfan should cherish. A DVD filled with nostalgic material from one of the better progressive rock bands from the past.



Eloy, het Duitse prog icoon voor vele progressieve rockfans geeft een box uit met 2 Dvd’s, die een overzicht geeft van hun 40 jaar bestaan. Het is een hebbeding voor deze fans, want er is niet zoveel beeldmateriaal van Eloy beschikbaar. Maar het had nog zoveel meer kunnen zijn. De eerste DVD is een documentaire met interviews over al hun albums en muziek. De videoclips die schaars toegevoegd zijn, zijn veel te kort. Het is een interessante documentaire, maar één die je geen twee keer bekijkt, vooral door de lange gesprekken. Gelukkig dat er Engelse ondertitels toegevoegd werden, zodat ook niet Duitse fans het geheel kunnen volgen. Je vindt ook nog een fotoreportage op deze eerste DVD.
Het tweede schijfje is een verzameling van clips. Ik ben niet echt opgetogen over de songkeuzes, maar dat is slechts een opinie, natuurlijk. De meeste clips komen uit televisieshows, wat een statisch optreden oplevert met weinig lichtshow. Het geluid en het beeld van de oudste clips lopen dikwijls niet synchroon, maar het blijft een interessant overzicht van wat ze bereikten tijdens die 40 jaar. Het is ook leuk om de groep te zien veranderen gedurende die jaren. Niet alleen worden de muzikanten ouder, maar ook de muziek evolueert doorheen hun loopbaan.
De bonusnummers zijn nog het interessantst van allemaal. Deze vier nummers zijn opgenomen tijdens een club optreden en klinken meer live dan al de rest.
Hoogtepunten zijn natuurlijk de nummers die van hun beide “Oceans” albums komen maar ook de rest is voor iedere progfan om van te snoepen. Een DVD vol met nostalgisch materiaal van één van de betere progressieve rockgroepen uit het verleden.
