Het zal je maar overkomen. Je bent in de jaren zeventig van de vorig eeuw fanatiek bezig met progrock en pas vijfendertig jaar later ontdek je nog een onbekende parel. Mandalaband is het geesteskind van de Engelse componist, klavierspeler en producer David Rohl die in het begin van de jaren zeventig een groep samenstelde om een aantal van zijn composities te vertolken. Uit die samenwerking ontsproot de lp ‘Mandalaband I’. Op die plaat horen we een (h)echte groep aan het werk waarbij het magistrale ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ met zijn vier bewegingen een groot deel van de tijd inneemt. Enkele jaren later werkt hij met een hele rist bekende muzikanten aan een tweede concept lp die als titel ‘The Eye Of Wendor’ meekreeg. Daarbij kon hij o.a. beroep doen op de nagenoeg volledige bezetting van Barclay James Harvest, Moody Blues zanger/gitarist Justin Hayward en leden van 10CC. Rohl heeft voor de release van deze in mooie digipack gehulde dubbele cd alles geremixt en geremasterd. Het resultaat klinkt verbluffend fris en hedendaags. Wie een beetje vertrouwd is met de seventies zal de referenties zeker kunnen plaatsen: The Moody Blues, Camel en het meer obscure, maar nog steeds actieve The Enid. De orkestrale sound van Mandalaband heeft dan toch weer een verassend laag bombast gehalte. Rohl heeft aan elke cd ook nog drie bonustracks toegevoegd die meer inzicht moeten geven in het groeiproces van de band. Het gaat om demo’s die nadien herwerkt zijn voor de definitieve versies. De kwaliteit van deze cd’s overtreft zonder twijfel het meeste wat vandaag in dat genre wordt gemaakt. Dit is symfonische rock op zijn best. Liefhebbers kunnen dit blind kopen. Sinds 2009 is de groep opnieuw actief en in februari mogen we hun vierde cd verwachten.

Over the years The Eye of Wendor has attained cult status amongst Prog Rock fans all over the world.
David has completely remixed and remastered the album and now the sheer quality of the production
and recording can be appreciated with a new clarity and depth. The complex counter rhythms and
melodies which made Wendor such a special album are here revealed as they were originally heard in
the studio during those halcyon days in the late 1970s. Based on a Tolkienesque fantasy centred around
a magical gem-stone, vocalists Eric Stewart (10cc), Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), Justin Hayward
(Moody Blues), Graham Gouldman, Lol Creme & Kevin Godley (10cc) and Paul Young (Sad Café/
Mike and the Mechanics) tell the tale.
