Parallaxe is a relatively unknown french band, having released in 2005 their first demo-cd in own production, my colleague reviewer was very enthusiastic about this band. Sadly they have not yet found a record label for their current release ‘Soundtrack’. Unbelievable, because this is the best instrumental album I have heard in many years. It is utterly difficult to pinpoint their music, but you may catalogue it somewhere between fusion, progressive rock and progressive metal. Regarding virtuosity you may place this guts amongst great names like Liquid Tension Experiment, Dream Theater or earlier Chick Corea and Al Dimeola.

‘Soundtrack’ is actually a concept album, where ‘music and image’ have a major role, a mix of progressive music with musical scores of films, cartoons and video games.
Due to the number of tracks (17 tracks bundled into 4 epics) it seems impossible to review them one by one, there is an big variation in tempo, styles and atmospheres. At the same time they use a lot of sound samples, like the drunken guys in ‘Taverne de Sarcocèle’ and the baby voice in ‘Game Over’. This track contains cartoonesque and jazzy fragments, followed by some true Latin American rhythms. The nimbly-fingered play of especially the guitar and keyboards players are well demonstrated in Freak Circus and Stymphale, the rhytm section acting on the same high level.

But sometimes it becomes a bit quieter, as for instance the beautiful dreamy combination of guitar and piano, they’ve called this album this album ‘Soundtrack’ not by coincidence, because very often it sounds as a film score. And speaking about movies, Game Over contains the same symphonic Hollywoodian passages like Dream Theater in their ‘Six Degrees’. The reference to these metal heroes seems obvious, because these French guys have an incredible amount of talent on a technical and compositional basis, certainly if you know they are mainly autodidact. Naturally this music will not appeal to all listeners, because this kind of complex music needs sometimes a lot of efforts. The first part of the album contains technical highlights, the second part aims more on different atmospheres and rhythm changes. Origine appears to be the Octavarium of Parallaxe.

It is surprising how varied an instrumental album can be, this has been demonstrated more than once in the past. And taken into account the splendid production and it is almost ‘perfect’. In a nut shell, this is an absolute must for fans of Dream Theater, these 4 musicians deserve more recognition abroad. With good management this band from Bordeaux will certainly have their breakthrough very soon. Until then, you can only buy their album on www.parallaxe.org .




Parallaxe is een relatief onbekende Franse groep, die in 2005 een eerste demo-cd in eigen beheer heeft uitgebracht. Toen werd reeds door mijn collega zeer positief over deze groep geoordeeld. Voor de huidige release ‘Soundtrack’ hebben ze blijkbaar nog steeds geen label weten te strikken. Onbegrijpelijk vind ik dat, want dit is het beste instrumentale album, dat ik in jaren heb mogen beluisteren. Het is uitermate moeilijk om hun muziek in een vakje te plaatsen, maar als het dan toch moet dan zou ik ze ergens tussen fusion, progressieve rock en progressieve metal catalogeren. Qua virtuositeit kunnen ze gerust in de galerij der groten worden geplaatst naast groepen als Liquid Tension Experiment, Dream Theater of vroeger Chick Corea en Al Dimeola.

‘Soundtrack’ is eigenlijk een conceptalbum, waarin ‘muziek en beeld’ centraal staan, een mix van progressieve muziek met muziekscores van films, cartoons en videospelletjes.
Gezien het grote aantal nummers (17 nummers gebundeld in 4 epics) lijkt het onbegonnen werk om ze één voor één te bespreken, er is immers een onwaarschijnlijke variatie in tempo’s, stijlen en sferen. Tevens wordt er vaak gebruik gemaakt van allerlei sound samples, zoals het dronkemansgelal in ‘Taverne de Sarcocèle’ en het baby-stemmetje in ‘Game Over’. Dat nummer alleen al bevat tegelijk cartooneske en jazzy passages, gevolgd door heuse Latijns-amerikaanse ritmes. De vingervlugheid van vooral gitarist en keyboardspeler worden bijvoorbeeld geëtaleerd in Freak Circus en Stymphale, de ritmesectie laat zich bij dit alles niet onbetuigd en acteert op hetzelfde niveau.

Maar het kan ook wat rustiger, getuige de prachtige, dromerige combinatie gitaar-piano, niet toevallig heet dit album ‘Soundtrack’, want vaak klinkt dit als echte filmmuziek. En over film gesproken, Game Over bevat diezelfde filmische symfonische Hollywood-passages als Dream Theater in zijn Six Degrees. De referentie is niet toevallig, want deze Fransen beschikken, ondanks het feit dat ze autodidact blijken te zijn, over een ongelofelijke dosis talent, zowel op technisch als compositorisch gebied. Uiteraard zal deze muziek niet bij alle muziekfans aanslaan, want dergelijke complexiteit vereist toch enige inspanning bij de luisteraar. Waar het eerste deel van het album het vooral moet hebben van technische hoogstandjes, wordt in het tweede deel vooral gemikt op wijzigende atmosferen en tempo’s, Origine lijkt wel het Octavarium van Parallaxe.

Het blijft echter vooral verbazend hoe gevarieerd en tegelijk boeiend een instrumentaal album kan zijn, in het verleden is al meermaals gebleken dat dit geen sinecure is. En neem daarbij nog een feilloze productie en je benadert zowaar bijna de perfectie. Kortom, voor fans van Dream Theater is dit een absolute must, deze 4 muzikanten verdienen echt wel meer erkentelijkheid in het buitenland. Mits een goed management moet deze groep uit Bordeaux zeker kunnen doorbreken. Tot dan kan je het album enkel aanschaffen via hun site www.parallaxe.org .
