Beppe Crovella is a well respected musician in his homeland Italy. This Turin based composer, keyboard wizard and producer, born in 1952, is mainly known for his ground breaking work in progressive rock, jazz and cartoon music.

The number of keys played by Crovella, on this album is impressive. The concept of the music is easy. Crovella brings tribute to Soft Machine keyboardist Mike Ratledge. The whole album is dedicated to Ratledge original and adventurous compositions. The idea sounds interesting and immediately caught my attention. But after listening to the album now for more than a dozen times I have to admit that I am a little bit disappointed. Ratledges compositions are very hard to recognize. Crovella turns them into soundscapes or jazzy interludes that lack direction. However some might find these songs panoramic and colourful, to me they sound too noisy and freaky.

I deeply respect the time and effort Moonjune Music puts into this music. Bringing out this difficult and more specialized music to a larger audience deserves respect. Therefore it’s a pity to say I lost interest in this music halfway the album. Listening to the album before buying it could be a good idea.



Beppe Crovella is een begrip in eigen land. Deze Italiaanse ‘keyboard-tovenaar’ geniet heel wat respect en aanzien in zijn eigen thuisbasis Turijn. De in 1952 geboren muzikant doorzwom al heel wat muzikale watertjes maar heeft zich vooral gespecialiseerd in het bespelen van allerlei soorten toetsen.

De waslijst van verschillende ‘keys’ die hij op dit album ‘betokkelt’ is enorm. Het concept van de songs echter is eenvoudiger. Crovella wil met dit album een ode brengen aan de legendarische Soft Machine toetsenist Mike Ratledge. Deze baanbrekende muzikant behoort zonder enige twijfel tot de reuzen in de progressieve muziek. Mijn interesse was meteen gewekt. Maar wat blijkt. Vele van de nummers drijven zo ver weg van het origineel dat de oorspronkelijke songs nog nauwelijks te herkennen zijn. Op zich hoeft dat geen bezwaar te zijn, maar mij lijken de klanken toch te zweverig en te veel getokkel om echt te kunnen boeien. Het album barst van de soundscapes en het is dan ook zoeken om echt interessante en boeiende songs te ontdekken. Wie echter houdt van kleurige, panoramische, ietwat eentonige, jazzy soundscapes vindt dit album misschien interessant. Mij kon het album jammer genoeg maar matig boeien.

Toch blijf ik het knap vinden dat Moonjune Music aandacht blijft besteden aan deze moeilijkere ‘nichemuziek’. Daarom verdient het album zeker mijn respect. Toch zou ik iedereen aanraden eerst eens te luisteren naar enkele songs alvorens over te gaan tot de aanschaf van het album.
