The American band Cynic has been eulogized by press and audience for years, based on one single album ‘Focus’. Indeed, the things you heard on that album were the nearest approach to the boundaries of human skilfulness, a performance of avant-gardistic mathematic virtuosity. When they announced their reunion in 2007, the new gigs attracted many people. I still remember their dizzy-making concert at ProgPower 2008. In the meantime a new album ‘Traced In Air’ has been released and once again it was a reason to come up with superlatives.

True musicians do not have boundaries or restrictions in style nor genre. One might call Cynic a real prototype of that notion. On this EP ‘Re-traced’ they present us five songs in a stripped off, sober version. As busy and hectic as they usually are, as quiet, peaceful and lovely it sounds now. ‘Space’ starts with modern ambient sounds and the dreamy vocals are evocative of the atmosphere within Porcupine Tree. Guitarist Tymon (the man from the primordial screams) has been told to shut up for twenty minutes and oh wonder… the songs appear to be common, yet beautiful singer songwriter tunes from romantic bards. I cannot imagine a bigger contrast. ‘Evolutionary’ goes in crescendo for a while towards a broader range of tumult, but generally speaking it remains semi-acoustic. Only in ‘Wheels Within Wheels’ they could not erase all progressive restlessness, but do mark the refined guitar solo and the snoring sound of the fretless bass! In ‘King’ one can hear a bit distortion on vocals, furthermore all tricks and intricacies remain far away. This approach might lack the unique essence of Cynic’s obstinate visions, but it will appeal to a larger crowd. Anyway, it is much more accessible and for the musicians it might have been refreshing.



Het Amerikaanse Cynic werd jarenlang op handen gedragen door pers en publiek op basis van het album ‘Focus’. Wat daarop te horen was grensde ook aan het menselijk kunnen van avant-gardistische, mathematische virtuositeit. Toen in 2007 de reünie aangekondigd werd, trokken de concerten veel gegadigden. Ik herinner me nog een duizelingwekkend concert op ProgPower 2008. Inmiddels heeft een nieuw album ‘Traced In Air’ de meute terug de superlatieven uit de kast doen halen.

Echte muzikanten kennen geen grenzen noch stijlbeperkingen. Cynic mag daar het prototype van genoemd worden. Op deze ep ‘Re-traced’ presenteert men vijf songs in een uitgeklede, sobere versie. Zo druk en hectisch het er gewoonlijk aan toe gaat, zo kalm, vredig en lieflijk klinkt het nu. ‘Space’ start met moderne ambientgeluiden en de dromerige zang roept meteen het beeld van Porcupine Tree op. Gitarist Tymon (de man der oerschreeuwen) is hier twintig minuten het zwijgen opgelegd en o wonder… de songs lijken wel gewone, maar mooie luisterliedjes van een romantische bard. Een groter contrast kan ik me niet voorstellen. ‘Evolutionary’ zwelt even aan tot een bredere waaier van tumult, maar grotendeels blijft men semi-akoestisch. Alleen in ‘Wheels Within Wheels’ is de progressieve onrust niet weg te gommen, maar let eens op die fijnbesnaarde gitaarsolo en de ronkende klank der fretloze bas! Alleen in ‘King’ is er enige stemvervorming, voor de rest blijven toeters en bellen in de kast. Misschien mist deze benadering de unieke essentie van Cynic’s eigenzinnigheid, maar meer mensen zullen dit waarderen. Het is in ieder geval een stuk toegankelijker en voor de mannen zelf eens een verfrissende andere aanpak.
