‘Hollywood’, by Finnsih proggers ‘Circle’, has to be one of the most bizarre albums that have reached me so far. Explaining the Belgian political situation to a ten years old kid looks easier to me than telling you where this music stands for. But, let’s give it a try anyway.

Circle is a progressive rock band, mainly operating in the Finnish underground scene. However, these guys now made it on the bill of the famous Roskilde festival. Kraut Rock seems to be their main influence. And most of the songs have that German Kraut feeling. Their latest release ‘Hollywood’ lasts just one hour and is packed with so many different styles that it is hard to describe what this eclectic and psychedelic album sounds like. Here we go. Just blend some Beatles with Zappa, flavour this mix up with some Can, Hard Rock, west coast experimental sixties rock and pop and what you get comes close to the sound these experimental Finns produce. Beware, this music is no noise or a bunch of sounds without direction, melody and tunes. No, all songs are well composed and structured. Not every song is brilliant but most of them are far beyond average.

I really enjoyed listening to ‘Hollywood’. These ‘crazy’ boys also invented a fine name for the music they produce: New Wave Of Finnish Heavy Metal. I really wonder why the Scandinavian countries deliver so many great bands. Is it the blood in their veins, the water they drink or simply the air they breathe? ‘Hollywood’ might just be my soundtrack for a long and psychedelic summer.



Dit moet één van de meest bizarre platen zijn die ik ooit in mijn handen heb gekregen. Uitleggen waar deze muziek voor staat, moet zo ongeveer even moeilijk zijn als uitleggen aan iemand van tien jaar wat de splitsing van Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde precies inhoudt. En toch doen we een poging.

Circle is een Finse band die werd opgericht in 1991 en die een stevige aanhang heeft in de Finse ondergrond. Dat de band stilaan uit de obscure Finse scene klimt, bewijst hun plaats op de affiche van het Roskilde festival begin juli. Deze jongens groeiden op met een stevige portie Krautrock en dat is nog steeds de voornaamste leest waarop de nummers zijn geschreven. Hun laatste worp ‘Hollywood’ klokt af op één uur, telt slechts acht nummers die ongeveer het hele muzikale pallet inkleuren en weet toch aardig te boeien. Verwacht geen oeverloos gepingel en geëxperimenteer, natuurlijk wordt er wel een extra inspanning verwacht van de luisteraar, maar wel nummers die duidelijk ergens naartoe gaan. Een eenzijdige stijl is er niet, of het moest het ontbreken van een stijl zijn. De songs gaan van Beatles naar Zappa, van Can naar Americana, van hard rock en sixties west coast experimentele rock naar pop en terug naar psychedelica. Niet alle nummers zijn even goed, maar toch liet dit album me achter met een fijn gevoel. De heren hebben toch een beschrijving gevonden voor hun muziek, New Wave Of Finnish Heavy Metal.

Hoe komt het toch dat zoveel boeiende bands uit het hoge noorden komen? Wat doen ze daar in het leidingwater? Circle is beslist een band die het ontdekken meer dan waard is. Ik koester alvast mijn exemplaar en ga met ‘Hollywood’ een leuke psychedelische zomer tegemoet.
