Triumph had its heydays in the late seventies and in the eighties. At that time Canada seemed to be a trusty supplier of power trio’s (Rush, Triumph). In this terse line-up, the bands succeeded in producing a full-blown rather progressive sound. This sound is even upgraded on this ‘Greatest Hits’ – an anthology of Triumph’s work – and brought to current standards through a mix by Rich Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush). Bet you hear the difference with your ancient, beloved vinyl discs!

All Triumph albums went gold or platinum, except ‘Edge Of Excess’ (1993) when Rik Emmett had already left. After that their success seemed to be vanished until they made a reunion appearance on the meanwhile slightly legendary Sweden Rock festival in 2008. Since then we are still waiting for new work, but yet this is a gem for people who are familiar with the band and those who haven’t heard of them till now. Just as with Rush, vocals are rather high-pitched yet sonorous and they swallow the bait in hard rock classics like ‘Allied Forces’, ‘I Live For The Weekend’ or ‘Spellbound’. On the other hand they have sensitive moments, illustrated by ‘Lay It On The Line’, ‘Hold On’ (delicious soloing) and the bonus track ‘Love Hurts’. Most of you will know that song from Nazareth; well it is okay but Nazareth does it better. Triumph flirts with reggae in ‘Never Surrender’ and introduces slide guitar in ‘Lights Go Down’. In ‘Rock And Roll Machine’ they cut loose with brilliant guitar solos and a kind of jam session as result. This album is compiled as a live concert with the last one going nuts. It gives a heartfelt feeling to hear all these great tracks in a row. The complete package also includes a DVD with video clips and extras.



Triumph kende zijn grootste successen eind jaren zeventig en in de jaren tachtig. Het leek toen wel of er enkel superieure power trio’s uit Canada kwamen (Rush, Triumph). In een kernachtige bezetting slaagden de bands er in om een vol geluid te produceren. Dit geluid is op deze ‘Greatest Hits’ – een bloemlezing uit Triumph’s werk – nog verbeterd en naar huidige standaards overgebracht door een mix van Rich Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush). Je hoort het verschil met je oude, geliefde vinylplaten.

Net als bij Rush zijn de vocalen vrij hoog maar helder en wisselt men stevige hard rock in ‘Allied Forces’, ‘I Live For The Weekend’ of ‘Spellbound’ af met gevoelige passages in ‘Lay It On The Line’, ‘Hold On’ (knappe solo’s) en de bonus track ‘Love Hurts’. De meeste mensen zullen dit kennen in de uitvoering van Nazareth; toch net iets beter. Triumph flirt met reggae in ‘Never Surrender’ en haalt de slide gitaar boven in ‘Lights Go Down’. In ‘Rock And Roll Machine’ gooit men alle remmen los met schitterende gitaarsolo’s en een soort jamsessie als resultaat. Zo luistert dit album weg als een live optreden. Het is hartverwarmend om al deze fantastische songs voor een keer samengebundeld te hebben. Het totale pakket bestaat uit cd en een dvd met videoclips en extra’s.
