The Englishman John Waite has already a long career behind him and now he lives in California. He got famous as the front man with the velvet, slightly husky voice of The Babys and scored many chartbuster with them in the seventies. Early eighties the band broke up and John started a solo career, kicking off with the album ‘Ignition’. As solo artist he did well too, just think of the million-seller ‘Missing You’ in 1984. From 1988 on it even got more interesting, seen from a musical point of view: the super group Bad English (with a.o. Deen Castranova) made two magnificent albums. A hit was scored with the mellifluent, yet beautiful ‘When I See You Smile’. In 1992 also this band called it quits.

John Waite has been releasing solo albums since then on a regular base – with a hiatus between 1987 and 1995 – and he still plays live for a selected crowd of diehard fans. For them – and actually for every fan of melodic rock – we have this live registration of the latest tour now, called ‘In Real Time’. And that’s a statement, since there seems to be nothing changed on the organic live performance. Vocals are not always perfect; particularly the background harmonies. Yet one can speak of interesting recordings, enjoying a set with songs from every era of Waite’s career. Thus it is a celebration of well-known songs with the steady rocking ‘Change’, the immortal ‘Missing You’, the hit of The Babys ‘Head First’ and the still very beautiful ‘Every Time I Think Of You’. It is a mystery to me why there needs to be a band introduction and a nice but superfluous guitar solo of Luis Maldonado bluntly in between all those proper songs. The Led Zeppelin cover ‘Rock And Roll’ is fun, but it should have been replaced by a Waite song too. Anyway, this is only a remark of a criticaster. I am pretty sure that every genuine fan will push the repeat button, after the ballad ‘When I See You Smile’ has occluded the concert.



De Engelsman John Waite heeft al een lange carrière achter de rug en woont nu in Californië. Hij werd bekend als frontman met de omfloerste stem van The Babys en scoorde met hen menige hit in de jaren zeventig. Begin jaren tachtig ging de band uit elkaar en begon John aan een solocarrière met de lp ‘Ignition’. Ook solo boerde hij goed, denk maar aan de miljoenenhit ‘Missing You’ uit 1984. In 1988 werd het muzikaal nog beter: de supergroep Bad English, met o.a. Deen Castranova maakte twee prachtige albums. Een hit werd gescoord met het kleverige, maar toch mooie ‘When I See You Smile’. In 1992 hield ook deze band op te bestaan.

Sindsdien is John Waite regelmatig soloalbums blijven uitbrengen – met een hiaat tussen 1987 en 1995 - en treedt hij ook nog steeds op voor een harde kern fans. Voor hen – en voor alle liefhebbers van melodieuze rock – is er nu deze live registratie ‘In Real Time’ van de laatste tournee. Er is inderdaad niet aan gesleuteld, want de zang is niet altijd vlekkeloos, vooral de achtergrondkoortjes. Toch kunnen we spreken van interessante opnamen, waarbij we een set krijgen met songs uit elke periode van Waite’s carrière. Het is dus een feest van herkenning met het stevig rockende ‘Change’, het onsterfelijke ‘Missing You’, de Babys-hit ‘Head First’ of het nog steeds erg mooie ‘Every Time I Think Of You’. Waarom er zonodig een band introductie en een mooie maar overbodige gitaarsolo van Luis Maldonado plompverloren tussen alle degelijke songs prijkt is me een raadsel. Ook de Led Zeppelin cover ‘Rock and Roll’ is leuk, maar was beter vervangen door een eigen nummer. Keuze genoeg. Het is slechts een opmerking als criticaster, want wanneer de ballad ‘When I See You Smile’ het concert afsluit, zal de reguliere fan vast vol jeugdsentiment op de “repeat” knop duwen.
