Mindgames, one of the main bands of Belgian symphonic rock, have finally released after four years their third studio album. The production is once again in the hands of Frank Van Bogaert, who not coincidentally also was behind the buttons for the debut of Neo-Prophet, there is definitely a common ground between the two groups.

The successor MMX (or better 2010) for 'Actors in a play would not have it easy to reach the same level, or even a higher level, because the reviews were very enthusiastic at that time. The album is still very good, but I get the feeling that they play a bit safe, so do not expect a major turnaround, it's all very recognizable with references to the icons of the past, especially Pink Floyd , Marillion and Genesis.
Unlike many groups today their music remains very optimistic, you can hear it already in the intro to 'The Source'. But with "Glory of Night" the real neo-prog begins with a typical quiet building, accompanied with many tempo changes, Hammond tricks and interesting guitar lines. After the at times reminding of Jon Anderson "In my humble opinion", the group releases everything in "Travels", a classical symphonic piece which synthesizers and guitars, driven by the pleasant voice of Bart Schram and some sound effects. One of the nicer compositions is certainly "Outside The Gloom" progressive rock with a commercial touch, as bands 10cc and Supertramp produced in the seventies. On ‘Destination Sky’ moog and guitar are dominant in a typical neo-prog song, but with 'The Pendulum' they bring a real epic, with also a dialogue between singer and producer Bart Schram Frank Van Bogaert. This song has everything you would expect from neo-prog and can be compared with the big names in the genre, such as Arena and Pendragon. Again keyboard player Tom Truyers and guitarist Rudy Van der Veken are outstanding, they both have a big impact on the overall sound of the group.

With MMX Mindgames will yet again score well in the world of progressive rock, and if you like the genre, you can blindly buy this. But for the next album I secretly hope for some surprises.



Mindgames, de vaandeldragers van de Belgische symfonische rock, hebben na 4 jaar wachten (eindelijk) hun derde studio-album uitgebracht. De productie was weer in handen van Frank Van Bogaert, die niet toevallig ook aan de knoppen stond bij het debuutalbum van Neo-Prophet, er zijn immers behoorlijk wat raakpunten tussen beide groepen.

De opvolger MMX (of beter gezegd 2010) van ‘Actors in a play’ zou het niet makkelijk krijgen om hetzelfde niveau, laat staan een hoger niveau, te halen, want de kritieken waren destijds heel lovend. Het nieuwe album is nog steeds zeer goed, maar ik krijg wel het gevoel dat ze wat op safe spelen, verwacht je dus niet aan een grote ommezwaai, het is allemaal heel herkenbaar met nog steeds referenties aan de toppers van weleer, met name Pink Floyd, Marillion en Genesis.

In tegenstelling tot veel groepen tegenwoordig blijven deze jongens heel optimistische muziek maken, dat hoor je al van bij de intro in ‘The Source’. Maar met ‘Glory of Night’ begint de echte neo-prog met die typische rustige opbouw, gepaard gaande met vele tempo-wisselingen, Hammond-uithalen en interessante gitaarlijnen. Na het ingetogen bijwijlen aan Jon Anderson refererende ‘In my humble opinion’ trekt de groep weer alle registers open in ‘Travels’, een klassiek symfonisch stuk waarin synthesizers en gitaren elkaar de loef afsteken, gedragen door de aangename stem van Bart Schram en behoorlijk wat geluidseffecten. Eén van de leukere composities is zeker ‘Outside The Gloom’, progressieve rock maar toch met een commerciële inslag, zoals destijds ook 10cc en Supertramp. Op Destination Sky halen moog en gitaar weer de bovenhand in typisch neo-prog nummer, maar met ‘The Pendulum’ brengen ze een heuse epic, waarin een dialoog wordt gevoerd tussen zanger Bart Schram en producer Frank Van Bogaert. Dit nummer heeft alles wat je van neo-prog kan verwachten en moet niet onderdoen voor de grote namen in het genre, zoals Arena en Pendragon. En ook hier weer schitteren keyboard-speler Tom Truyers en gitarist Rudy Van der Veken, die met hun beiden toch een grote stempel drukken op de sound van de groep.

Met MMX zal Mindgames toch weer goed scoren in de middens van de progressieve rock, en als je houdt van het genre, dan kan je blindelings dit kleinood aanschaffen. Maar voor een volgend album hoop ik toch stiekem op wat verrassingen.
