Pain Of Salvation or should I say main composer Daniel Gildenlöw has always chosen his own path without worrying whether the fans would still like them or not. Or maybe he is just sure that the fans will like what he is writing!
And it’s working out every time so far. This time the change is even more drastic than before. If you know Pain Of Salvation as a progmetal band, you will be surprised by this record.

Or to use Daniels words: “Road Salt One is twelve tracks of sweaty gravel, asphalt butterflies, untrodden paths and brave decisions. It will not beg for your liking, it will not make excuses, it will not carry you safely across the dangerous waters. If you don't pick up its pace it will leave you stranded at the curb of the road. Yes, Road Salt One might indeed be a harsh lover, but if you have the guts to follow it whole-heartedly and dare to surrender to its voice, it will take you places you need to visit.”
Although most of the tracks have a bluesy feeling and are seventies rock driven, they certainly remain Pain Of Salvation tracks. And that’s the strength of this band: incorporating other styles and yet making it their own.
“No Way” is a perfect opener, with some great guitar and drums in the middle part. It’s a very bluesy ballad, which changes into “She Likes to Hide”, an even bluesier ballad but sung with an incredible emotion. Daniel improves each album. What a range and what an explosion of emotions. This emotional voyage gets even an extra uplift in the extremely strong song “Sisters”. The melody of the piano reminds me of “Undertow” from “Remedy Lane”.
“Sleeping under the Stars” is a silly waltz, with a smile, which ends in a chaotic ending that sounds like a carrousel on a carnival. This could become the audience’s favourite, like “Disco Queen” was, during the last tour.
“Linoleum”, which was already on the EP with the same name, “Curiosity” and “Where it Hurts” will please the early POS fans, because these have a bit of a progmetal touch, but still keep the seventies rock sound that grasps you during the whole album.
The title track was the song they used for the Melodifestivalen show (a pre-selection for the Eurovision Song festival). It’s a very subtle, lullaby-ish ballad with a whole spectrum of feelings streaming out.
“Road Salt” is certainly an unbelievable, drastic change for the band, but I think they pulled it off. Because of the quietness of most songs, which is not what we are used from the band, it’s not my favourite Pain Of Salvation album yet but it’s quickly catching up on the rest. I once said the same about “Be”.



Pain Of Salvation of moet ik eerder zeggen componist Daniel Gildenlöw is altijd zijn eigen weg gegaan, zonder zich te bekommeren of de fans er wel of niet zouden van houden. Of misschien is hij gewoon zeker dat de fans alles wat hij schrijft goed vinden!
Tot dusver is dat dan ook meer dan gelukt. Deze keer is de verandering nog drastischer dan ooit tevoren. Als je Pain Of Salvation kent als progmetalgroep dan staat je wel een verrassing te wachten.
Nu we het toch over keuzes hebben: “Road Salt” gaat over het nemen van belangrijke beslissingen in het leven. Soms word je daarbij geholpen door je pad sneeuwvrij te maken met strooizout (road salt). Hoewel de meeste nummers een bluesy sound hebben en door ‘seventies rock’ gedreven zijn, blijven ze toch Pain Of Salvation songs. En dat is juist de sterkte van de groep: het inbrengen van andere stijlen en die toch iets van jezelf meegeven.
“No Way” is een perfect openingsnummer, met prachtige gitaar en drumstukjes in het midden. Het is een zeer bluesy ballad, die bijna naadloos overgaat in “She Likes to Hide”, een zelfs nog bluesier ballad maar gezongen met enorm veel emotie. Daniel wordt ieder album beter. Wat een bereik heeft die man en wat een explosie van emoties zitten verborgen in die stembanden. Deze emotionele reis krijgt zelfs nog een extra uplift in het extreem sterk gezongen “Sisters”. De melodie van de piano doet me denken aan Undertow uit “Remedy Lane”.
“Sleeping under the Stars” is een gek walsje, met een glimlach, dat chaotisch eindigt en klinkt als een draaimolen op een kermis. Dit zou wel eens de publiekslieveling kunnen worden, zoals “Disco Queen” was tijdens de vorige optredens.
“Linoleum”, dat reeds op de EP met dezelfde naam stond, “Curiosity” en “Where it Hurts” zullen beter bevallen bij de POS fans want die bevatten nog een vleugje progmetal, maar hebben toch ook dat seventies rock gevoel dat je in zijn greep houdt gedurende het ganse album.
Het titelnummer werd gebruikt voor de Melodifestivalen show (een preselectie voor het Eurovisie Songfestival). Het is een zeer subtiel, wiegelied-achtige ballade met een uitstroom van een zeer breed spectrum van gevoelens.
“Road Salt” is zeker en vast een ongelooflijke, drastische verandering voor de groep, maar ik denk dat ze ermee wegkomen. Door de kalmte van de nummers, die we niet echt gewoon zijn van de groep, is het voorlopig niet mijn favoriete POS album, maar het haalt wel vlug in op de rest. Ik heb ooit hetzelfde gezegd over “Be”.
