I always considered Asia as a simplified version of UK. This super group with members of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and Yes released some classic tunes in the eighties, but they vanished in a haze after that. Some of the musicians remained active in other bands/projects. In 2006 the original members came together again after twenty-three years for a tour and we can enjoy this reflection on the DVD ‘Fantasia: Live In Tokyo’. It wasn’t the end. They wrote new material and ‘Phoenix’ surprised many of their adepts.

The next studio album ‘Omega’ now hits the stores and I go for an unprejudiced view. It is a kind of trip into the past; but a fine one. Initially I had progressive rock in mind to label this, but that’s not the case. It turns into melodic rock/AOR. Asia happens to be very catchy and approachable; they focus on song writing and do not loose themselves into instrumental intricacies. No problems in this case, since opener and single ‘Finger On The Trigger’ turns into a direct hit. John Wetton’s vocals are great to hear, always agreeable, and more than one hour the band has me in its grip. No kiddin’, after all this time!

Any highlights? Sure, listen to the melancholic ‘There Was A Time’ and shed a tear with everyone’s wealthy past. Asia has a typical sound and they summarize it here in thirteen songs. Their slightly swinging keyboards parts are present in catchy songs like ‘I Believe’ and the lightly ‘Holy War’ (no oriental influences for a chance). The Beatles have put their mark on ‘Emily’ and ‘I’m Still The Same’; while the ballad ‘Ever Yours’ moves you without getting mellifluent. Consequently the reunion of Asia is a good thing. They can add something to the rock heritage. Without having to prove something, they have made an album that is fine to listen to. It ends in an introvert manner with the contemplative ‘Don’t Wanna Lose You’. May be due to aging, but it’s fine.



Ik heb Asia altijd gezien als een vereenvoudigd vervolg op UK. Deze supergroep met leden van Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson en Yes heeft in de jaren tachtig enkele klassiekers uitgebracht, maar verdween dan van het toneel, ook al bleven de muzikanten actief in andere projecten/bands. In 2006 kwamen de vier originele leden terug bij elkaar na drieëntwintig jaar voor een tournee en die reflectie konden we vinden op de dvd ‘Fantasia: Live in Tokyo’. Daar bleef het niet bij. Men schreef nieuw materiaal en ‘Phoenix’ verraste menig adept.

Het volgende studioalbum ‘Omega’ ligt nu in de winkels en ik ga voor een onbevangen beluistering. Het is een trip naar het verleden, maar wel een aangename. Oorspronkelijk had ik progressieve rock als leidraad staan, maar ik ga toch meer voor melodische rock/ AOR. Asia is namelijk erg toegankelijk, het liedje staat centraal en van instrumentale krachtpatserij is niets te merken. Dat is in dit geval niet erg, want opener en single ‘Finger On The Trigger’ is een gebalde hit. De zang van John Wetton is aangenaam om te beluisteren en meer dan een uur weet de band me te boeien, ook na al die tijd.

Hoogtepunten? Jazeker, luister naar het weemoedige ‘There Was A Time’ en pink een traan weg bij ieders rijke verleden. Asia heeft een typisch geluid dat ze hier vatten in dertien nieuwe nummers. De lichtjes swingende toetsen zijn aanwezig in toegankelijke songs als ‘I Believe’ en het luchtige ‘Holy War’ (geen oosterse invloeden). The Beatles hebben hun stempel gedrukt op ‘Emily’ en ‘I’m Still The Same’, terwijl de ballade ‘Ever Yours’ zonder melig te worden toch de juiste snaar raakt. De reünie van Asia is dus een goede zaak. Zij hebben nog iets bij te dragen aan het rock patrimonium. Zonder zichzelf te moeten bewijzen is dit gewoon een album dat lekker weg luistert en op ingetogen wijze eindigt met ‘Don’t Wanna Lose You’. De leeftijd begint dan wel mee te spelen.
