Parade is in fact the solo project of Chris Johnson, surrounded by ex-members of Panic Room and Mostly Autumn. Johnson, himself previously a member of Mostly Autumn and formerly on tour with Fish, has also appealed to include Heather Findlay and Bryan Josh. You might expect that the music would go in the direction of higher quoted groups. But this is certainly not the case, except perhaps for the closing track "The Ending".
After a first listening, it is difficult to determine whether this is modern progressive rock or indie rock. 'Come Alive' is carried by the penetrating voice of Anne-Marie Helder, supported by compelling instrumentation, where a typical snare drum sound (a bit in the style of Pure Reason Revolution). With 'Start Again', the tempo is accelerated, nice guitar riffs mixed with male and female vocals (not always clearly distinguishable). This song has a catchy chorus, but on closer listening you can hear also technical features. "The Diamond" in turn has a very quiet building, beautiful singing of Helder and also harmonious vocals with the rest of the band, gradually joined by the instruments in a climax to the end. This is the kind of alternative rock that goes in the direction of bands like Coldplay and Snow Patrol, but with more depth.

The close singing always come back, also in High Life, where a nice combination of vocals à la CSN & Y, percussion and Eastern influences are very surprising. Chris often uses voice distortion, this really might be somewhat redundant, because he has a good voice. "The Dogs" starts as a quiet Porcupine Tree or even better Blackfield (a side project of Steven Wilson), with at the end some roaring guitars.
Even in the quit songs Parade does not sound ‘common’ (Facing Down ). ‘Line Feed’ makes me think at the beginning of RPWL, a catchy chorus with a lot of up tempo sound, although at the end the noise sounds are a little exaggerated. In 'Cut' a quiet intro builds up into surprisingly solid rock.
And after the minimalist and laid back 'All that I wanted’ the album ends in a Mostly Autumn-mood, not at the least by the presence of a typical long guitar solo from Brian Josh, "Ending" is the longest track with the most progressive influences.

In short, "The Fabric" is a pleasant album, where by the presence of the guest musicians you might expect other music. The songs are quite original, which by no means seems evident in the current musical landscape. Highly recommended!



Parade kan beschouwd worden als het solo-project van Chris Johnson, die zich heet laten omringen door ex-leden van Panic Room en Mostly Autumn. Johnson, zelf ook een tijdje lid geweest van Mostly Autumn en op toernee geweest met Fish, heeft ook beroep gedaan op o.a. Heather Findlay en Bryan Josh. Je zou dan ook verwachten dat de muziek in de richting van hoger geciteerde groepen zou gaan. Niks is echter minder waar, behalve dan voor de afsluitende track ‘The Ending’.

Na een eerste beluistering is het moeilijk om uit te maken of dit nu indie dan wel moderne progressieve rock is. ‘Come Alive’ wordt vooral gedragen door de indringende stem van Anne-Marie Helder, ondersteund door meeslepende instrumentatie, waarin de snare drum een typische sound neerzet (een beetje in de stijl van Pure Reason Revolution). Met ‘Start again’ wordt het tempo wat opgeschroefd, leuke gitaarriffs met gemengde mannelijke en vouwelijke vocalen (overigens niet altijd duidelijk van elkaar te onderscheiden). Deze song heeft een refrein, dat ongetwijfeld blijft hangen, maar bij nadere beluistering hoor je toch ook technische hoogstandjes. ‘The Diamond’ heeft dan weer een heel rustige opbouw, met mooie zang van Helder en eveneens harmonieuze samenzang met de rest, stilaan vervoegen de instrumenten om in een climax te eindigen. Dit is het soort alternatieve rock dat in de richting gaat van groepen als Coldplay en Snow Patrol, maar dan wel met meer diepgang.

Die samenzang komt ook vaak terug, zo ook in High Life, waar een leuke combinatie van zang à la CSN&Y, percussie en oosterse invloeden toch wel verrassend overkomt. Chris gebruikt ook vaak stemvervorming, dit is eigenlijk misschien soms wat overbodig, want hij heeft een goede stem. ‘The Dogs’ start als een rustige Porcupine Tree of beter nog Blackfield (dat neder project van Steven Wilson), naar het einde toe knallen de loeiende gitaren wel uit de boxen.

Zelf wanneer het rustig blijft klinkt parade nog steeds niet alledaags (Facing Down). Feedline doet me in het begin wat denken aan RPWL, een aanstekelijk up tempo refrein met heel wat geluidseffecten, alhoewel die naar het einde soms wat overdreven klinken. In ‘Cut’ wotdt opnieuw van een rustige intro opgebouwd naar verrassend stevige rock.

En na het minimalistisch en laid back ‘All that I wanted’ eindigt het album dan toch in een Mostly Autumn-mood, niet in het minst door de aanwezigheid van zo’n typisch lang uitgesponnen gitaarsolo van Brian Josh, ‘Ending’ is dan ook niet toevallig het langste nummer met de meeste progressieve invloeden.

Kortom, ‘The Fabric’ is toch een aangenaam album geworden, waarbij je door de aanwezige gastmuzikanten op het verkeerde been wordt gezet. De nummers zijn vrij origineel, iets wat in het huidig muzikaal landschap geen evidentie meer is. Een aanrader!
