Steve Hackett needs no introduction. The Englishman got worldwide fame as guitarist of the progressive rock formation Genesis. The guitar solo in the song ‘Firth Of Fifth’ wrote history. In addition to Genesis he has a long time solo career and founded with Yes guitarist Steve Howe the super-group GTR, especially in the US very successful. Steve does not restrict himself to progressive rock, he also explored other genres as musician, such as jazz, world music and blues.

But we are not here to wallow in nostalgic feels. Hackett has a new solo album coming out and with this mishmash of music genres he masters, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. But it grandly improves upon acquaintance! All these genres are present, but they are assimilated in the songs in an approachable manner. Initially the man even mainly shows up as singer-songwriter on ‘Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth’. Another plus is that record never exceeds my limits of acceptable “freaking out”.

With opener ‘Fire On The Moon’ we have an excellent start. You really cannot dislike this (without being too shallow). Hackett sings quiescent and beautiful in a tranquil instrumental frame. But when he started soloing, shivers went down my spine. This is the man of ‘Firth Of Fifth’, no doubt about it! The slightly distorted vocals in the latter verse are captivating. In ‘Nomads’ shows Hackett his skills on classical (non-electric) guitar by playing very fast. It turns to Spanish flavours with clapping (castanets?) and rhythms reminding me of Andalusia. A magnificent guitar solo of the same ilk as in the first song perfects this track. There are two longer songs (around nine minute’s length) on this album and as a matter of course they cut loose in a progressive manner in these ones. But the calm vocals in both songs are extremely purifying (in the style of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’). ‘Emerald And Ashes’ has sudden rhythm changes towards an amalgam of dissonance, distorted guitar solos and even sax. The other lengthy track ‘Sleepers’ surely is a stunner! The calm beginning is very Genesis-alike. When the music goes in crescendo, everything is possible. Let us call it a progressive entirety of film music, jazz and heavy rock guitars. The solos have a special sound here. Concerning short instrumental songs we have the restless, jazzy ‘Tubehead’ for the advanced ones (too chaotic for me) and the slightly acoustic ‘Ghost In The Glass’. ‘Still Waters’ smoothly rocks with any blues overtones. A soulful choir with male and female completes the whole thing and the wild guitar solo is marvellous. Finally we occlude in oriental moods. That suggests the title ‘Last Train To Istanbul’ already and the music of Turkey is interpreted in a Hackettian way. Fine percussion and violin really make this a stand out track. And what is the conclusion? A surprisingly strong album that intrigues me in many ways. In May, Steve Hackett with band will play in our areas. The live tracks on the special edition make sure that he will never renounce or deny his Genesis past. Fortunately he doesn’t.



Steve Hackett hoeft geen introductie. De Engelsman werd wereldberoemd als gitarist van de progressieve rockformatie Genesis. De gitaarsolo in het nummer ‘Firth Of Fifth’ schreef wereldgeschiedenis. Naast Genesis bouwde hij een langdurige solocarrière uit en stichtte met Yes gitarist Steve Howe de supergroep GTR, vooral in de VS erg succesvol. Steve beperkt zich niet alleen tot progressieve rock, maar wist als muzikant ook andere genres als jazz, wereldmuziek en blues te verkennen.

Maar we zijn hier niet om ons te wentelen in nostalgische herinneringen. Hackett heeft namelijk een nieuw soloalbum uit en met dit allegaartje van beheerste muziekgenres had ik geen flauw idee wat we konden verwachten. Het is een enorme meevaller!!! Al die genres zitten er wel in, maar zijn op een bijzonder toegankelijke manier in de nieuwe songs verwerkt. Aanvankelijk komt de man zelfs vooral als singersongwriter naar voren op ‘Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth’. Een ander pluspunt is dat mijn grenzen van het toelaatbare “gefreak” NIET overschreden worden.

Met opener ‘Fire On The Moon’ zitten we al meteen goed. Dit kan je niet slecht vinden (zonder te vrijblijvend te zijn). Hackett zingt beheerst en mooi in een rustig instrumentaal kader. Vanaf hij echter begint te soleren lopen de rillingen over mijn rug. Dit is de man van ‘Firth Of Fifth’, geen twijfel! De ietwat vervormde zang in het latere couplet is beklijvend. In ‘Nomads’ etaleert Hackett zijn kunde op klassieke gitaar met vlug spel. Hij geeft dit een Spaanse wending met geklap (castagnetten?) en ritmes die ons in Andalusië doen belanden. Een prachtige gitaarsolo van hetzelfde kaliber als in het eerste nummer vervolmaakt deze track. Er staan twee langere nummers van een negental minuten op dit album en vanzelfsprekend wordt daar wat meer loos in gegaan op progressieve wijze. Wel is de rustige zang in beide songs bijzonder louterend (stijl van Pink Floyd in ‘Echoes’). ‘Emerald And Ashes’ heeft een plotse ritmewending naar een amalgaam van dissonante klanken, vervormde gitaarsolo’s en zelfs sax. De andere lange track ‘Sleepers’ is een knaller. Het kalme begin is erg Genesis-achtig. Wanneer de muziek in crescendo gaat, kan alles. Laat ons het een progressief geheel van filmmuziek, jazz en scheurende gitaren noemen. De solo’s hebben hier een speciale klank. Wat korte instrumentale nummers betreft is er het onrustige, jazzy ‘Tubehead’ voor gevorderden (te chaotisch voor mij) en het eerder akoestische ‘Ghost In The Glass’. ‘Still Waters’ rockt stevig met enige bluesinvloeden. Een soulvol koor met ook enige vrouwen maakt het af en de wilde gitaarsolo is prachtig. Tot slot belanden we in oosterse sferen. Dat suggereert de titel ‘Last Train To Istanbul’ al en de muziek van Turkije wordt op een Hackettiaanse wijze geïnterpreteerd. Knappe percussie en viool maken dit een knaller. Wat is het besluit? Een verrassend sterk album dat me op velerlei wijzen erg intrigeert. In mei is Steve Hackett met band in onze contreien. De live tracks op de speciale editie maken duidelijk dat hij zijn Genesis verleden nooit zal verloochenen. Hij moest eens durven!
