What can we say about Unitopia? After their overwhelming debut album for Inside Out (their second overall release) expectations were sky high. ‘The Garden’ received a perfect score. Ten out of ten. ‘The Garden’ really moved me and was, without any doubt, one of the best releases of the last years. Unitopia stands for a perfect mix of rock, classical music, groove and world music within a progressive framework. These Aussies became one of the best and most innovative bands in the progressive rock genre.

‘Artificial’ is surely one of the most anticipated albums for both fans and press. Could this album meet the expectations? Could it be as good as ‘The Garden’? Or was their previous release just a lucky shot? And was the band a one hit wonder? Was ‘The Garden’ just a once in a life time incident? Well, three times no! Mark and Sean still have the magic in their fingers. The guys can still come up with classic songs, beautiful arrangements, innovative melodies, sparkling orchestrations and brilliant tunes. Ten gems, ten classic songs! Looking for a song that really stands out is impossible. Is it ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ with its great Beatlesque arrangements and Fab Four lyrics? Or maybe ‘Rule Of The 3’s’, very jazzy, epic and with a wonderful melody? Or maybe the larger than life ‘Floyd’ ballad ‘The Great Reward’ which also ends the album? Or is it….?

We can keep on telling you for ages why this album is a must have. Or why this music moves you to tears. But let’s just end by saying that ‘Artificial’ is one of the best albums of the decade and that no record collection is complete without this release. Unitopia just made their second classic.



Tja, wat valt er nog te zeggen over Unitopia? Na hun verpletterend debuut voor Inside Out (hun tweede album) ‘The Garden’ waren de verwachtingen natuurlijk torenhoog. Het album kreeg van uw dienaar een perfecte tien op tien. Het was immers lang geleden dat ik nog zo murw geslagen werd. Unitopia staat voor de perfecte mix van rock, klassiek, groove en wereldmuziek in een bed van progressieve rock. Eigenlijk is deze band ideaal om je buurman uit te leggen wat progressieve rock precies is en waarom je nu eigenlijk zo betoverd bent door dit genre. Unitopia groeide met ‘The Garden’ in één klap uit tot één van de vlaggenschepen van het genre.

‘Artificial’ is zonder enige twijfel het album waarnaar het meest werd uitgekeken door fans en pers. Met een klein hartje en heel zenuwachtig haalde ik het cd’tje uit het hoesje. (Wat een prachtige cover). Zouden ze hun vorig album kunnen evenaren? Was hun vorig werk een ‘lucky shot’, een ‘once in a life time’ toevalstreffer? Nee, dus. Vanaf de eerste tonen hoor je dat het goed zit. Dat de magie nog steeds aanwezig is. Dat de pennen van Mark en Sean nog niet opgedroogd zijn. Jongens, jongens… wat een album. Tien parels die je nooit meer vergeet. Tien magistrale songs. Tien keer heerlijk genieten. Zoeken naar hoogtepunten is onmogelijk. Is het ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, lekker Beatlesque, compleet met Beatles teksten en Fab Four arrangementen of ‘Rule Of 3’s’, heerlijk jazzy, episch en met een buitenaardse melodie? Of is het de bloedmooie ballad ‘The Great Reward’ met een magistrale Floyd productie, die het album afsluit? Of is het…?

Je kan eindeloos verdergaan met het bewieroken van dit album. Maar eigenlijk is er maar één besluit. Deze cd is onmisbaar, is een must have, is een parel en een onontbeerlijke schat in iedere platencollectie. Je verzameling is niet volledig zonder ‘Artificial’. Het werk van deze Aussies is essentieel en nu al een klassieker. Verplichte aanschaf!
