A new release of Kaipa is always a feast for the progressive rock fans. The band was founded 35 years ago, what an unbelievable achievement. Off course, there was a gap of 20 years without any releases and I consider this Kaipa as ‘the next generation’, which started with “Notes from the Past “ in 2002. And they are still growing. From the first note of this album, you hear the maturity in the sound and in the compositions. These guys know what they are doing.
It’s the second album with Per Nilsson on guitar and he fits better in the band than Roine Stolt, without doubting Roine’s skills. The quality of his solos is extremely high. And this goes for the speedy, heavier solos as well as for the quiet acoustic pieces.
Kaipa has raised the bar once more. Without changing their sound, it has become one of their best albums.
The most important style in Hans Lundin’s writing is of course progressive rock. Just listen to the title track (11 minutes) and “Electric Power Water Notes” (18 minutes). Two tracks that must please every progressive rock fan. What a variation and what a high quality of musical skills. Patrik and Aleena are both singing their hearts out and are so wonderfully fitting together. Of course, the voice of Patrik brings references to Ritual in mind. The Moomins are never far away. This feeling is also helped by the recorder and whistles of by fellow Ritual musician Fredrik Lindqvist. (Ritual)
And when you have Jonas Reingold and Morgan Ågren as rhythm section, nothing can go wrong in that corner.
Next to the progressive rock style, there’s also the undeniable presence of folk influences. “Folkia’s first decision” is a little folk gem and a sort of sequel to “Folke’s Final Decision” from “Notes from the Past”. (Folkia being Folke’s daughter)
The violin and recorder are supporting this folky sound. The jazz fusion elements are almost completely gone and I consider this as a positive change to the Kaipa sound.
Maybe one little negative remark: everything is sounding so happy. There’s never a darker edge to the music, which could have helped to give it some more variation. But who can be against ‘feeling good’? ;-)
This is their best album, so far. If you liked Kaipa before, there is no doubt you will like this one. If you didn’t like them before, I think this won’t change, because Kaipa has only become more Kaipa. But you should try it out, anyway.



Een nieuw album van Kaipa is altijd een feest voor de progressieve rockfans. De groep bestaat ondertussen al 35 jaar. Wat een ongelooflijke prestatie. Er was natuurlijk wel een onderbreking van 20 jaar, zonder releases. Ik beschouw dan ook deze Kaipa als ‘the next generation’, die begon met “Notes from the Past “ in 2002. En ze zijn nog steeds in volle groei. Vanaf de eerste noot van het nieuwe album hoor je de volwassenheid in het geluid en in de composities. Die kerels weten waar ze mee bezig zijn.
Het is het tweede album met Per Nilsson op gitaar en hij past beter bij de groep dan Roine Stolt, zonder daarbij het talent van Roine in twijfel te trekken. De kwaliteit van zijn solo’s is extreem hoog. En dit geldt zowel voor de snellere, heviger solo’s als voor de kalmere akoestische stukken.
Kaipa heeft de lat nog maar eens hoger gelegd. Zonder dat ze hun sound drastisch veranderd hebben, is het één van hun beste albums geworden.
De voornaamste stijl in de composities van Hans Lundin is natuurlijk de progressieve rock. Luister maar eens naar het titelnummer (11 minuten) en “Electric Power Water Notes” (18 minuten). Twee nummers die moeten aanslaan bij alle progfans. Wat een afwisseling en wat een demonstratie van muzikaal talent.
Patrik en Aleena geven het allerbeste met hun stemmen die zo prachtig bij elkaar passen. Natuurlijk brengt de stem van Patrik referenties naar Ritual mee. De Moomins zijn nooit ver weg. Dit gevoel wordt dan nog eens aangewakkerd door de blokfluit en andere fluitjes van Fredrik Lindqvist. (Ritual)
En als je dan nog Jonas Reingold en Morgan Ågren als ritme sectie hebt, kan het ook in die hoek al niet meer verkeerd gaan.
Naast progressieve rock, is er ook altijd de onontkenbare aanwezigheid van folkinvloeden. “Folkia’s first decision” is een klein folk juweeltje en een vervolg op “Folke’s Final Decision” van “Notes from the Past”. (Folkia is blijkbaar de dochter van Folke) Ook de viool en de blokfluit helpen mee aan deze folksong. De jazz elementen zijn nagenoeg volledig verdwenen en dat vind ik zeker een positieve verandering aan de Kaipa sound.
Misschien toch een kleine negatieve opmerking: alles klinkt zo ‘happy’. Er is nooit een donker randje aan de muziek, wat toch wat extra variatie had toegevoegd. Maar wie kan natuurlijk tegen ‘een goed gevoel’ zijn?
Dit is veruit hun beste album. Als je vroeger al van Kaipa hield, dan moet je niet twijfelen over deze nieuwste uitgave. Als je niet van hen hield, dan denk ik dat dit album jouw mening niet zal wijzigen, want Kaipa is alleen maar meer Kaipa geworden. Maar je moet het toch eens proberen.
