Straight out of the South of Belgium, we received the latest release by Belgian seventies sounding rock band Nehal. Driving force behind this trio is Nehal Casablanca. His guitar playing and singing reminds me of lots of great seventies sounding artists. ‘Some Kind Of Medicine’ is the band’s second release and the first to be released by Moonzoo Records. We all know that Roland, Mario and their team have a fine nose for new talent, but Nehal might just be the commercial joker the label was looking for. Stating that the music of Nehal sounds very seventies could be the understatement of the year. We hear Hendrix, Ben Harper, Peppers, Zeppelin and Faith No More. But without any doubt Lenny Kravitz is Casablanca’s main influence. Same guitar playing and voice. Same crispy and warm sound. Too much Kravitz and not enough own ideas? Who cares! As long as the album is packed with catchy tunes, fine riffs and memorable hooks, that’s fine with me. It only takes one listen to sing along with most of the songs. Nehal rocks like hell and the songs are highly entertaining.

So far the band mainly toured in the local club circuit, although Nehal played Dour Festival and climbed the stage at the Hard Rock Café in Paris, after this release all might change for the band. Nehal has a double meaning. In Indian it stands for ‘love and beauty’. In Arabic it means ‘eager to get knowledge’. Sounds very spiritual and Kravitz-like, isn’t it? ‘Some Kind Of Medicine’ is a must have for anyone looking for that warm and lovely vintage Kravitz flow. Since Lenny seems to have lost the art of writing fine songs (his latest albums weren’t that good), Nehal is the perfect alternative. Fine album. Mission accomplished. This album deserves your attention.

Vanuit het Zuiden van ons land bereikt ons de nieuwe cd van Nehal. Dit drietal is het paradepaardje van zanger, gitarist en songschrijver Nehal Casablanca. De band is met ‘Some Kind Of Medicine’ toe aan haar tweede album. Het eerste op het Moonzoo Label. Dat Roland, Mario en het ganse team een neus hadden voor talent bewezen ze reeds in het verleden. Maar nu hebben ze met Nehal toch een vis aan de haak geslagen die ook commercieel hoge ogen zou kunnen gooien. De muziek klinkt erg seventies. Namen als Hendrix, Ben Harper, Peppers, Zeppelin en Faith No More komen me spontaan voor de geest bij het beluisteren van dit album. Maar de beste vergelijking is toch wel het vintage geluid van Lenny Kravitz. De stem, de sound en de gitaren van Casablanca, alles ademt Kravitz. Daardoor ontbreekt het de groep vooralsnog aan een eigen geluid. Maar ik zeg altijd, beter leuk gejat, dan slecht gemaakt. Bovendien staat het album vol erg aanstekelijke en leuke rocksongs. Één keer luisteren en je bent volledig mee.

Voorlopig moest de band het stellen met optredens in het lokale circuit, al stonden de heren toch op het Dour Festival en werd er opgetreden in het Parijse Hard Rock Café, maar daar zal na het verschijnen van ‘Some Kind Of Medicine’ zeker verandering in komen. De naam van de band heeft een dubbele betekenis. In het Indisch staat Nehal voor ‘liefdevol en mooi’ en in het Arabisch betekent het ‘drang naar kennis’. Deze dubbele betekenis verwijst naar het spirituele karakter van de band. Dus ook daar ligt de link met Kravitz. Wie houdt van een vintage seventies geluid en vindt dat Kravitz al een paar jaar op de dool is, kan blindelings dit album aanschaffen. Dit is het album waarop alle Kravitz fans al jaren zaten te wachten. Alleen is het door Nehal gemaakt. Een dikke proficiat en een kus van de juffrouw. Dit album verdient dubbel en dik jouw aandacht.
