After listening to Bigelf, I think every band that claims to be playing classic rock can put away their instruments, because this is the real classic rock. This album is like an encyclopaedia of rock music, a walk through rock history.
It starts off with “The Gravest Show on Earth”, which is an opening track like “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. It contains the same harmonics, the same unusual musical twitches and it invites you to come listen to this fabulous, theatrical show.
“Blackball” could have been a Black Sabbath track, especially due to the voice of Damon Fox, which has an “Ozzy” sound. The middle part opens the box of blues clichés and the combination with the sax gives the end a Pink Floyd touch. Even The Doors are lurking round the corner by means of a “Riders on the Storm” atmosphere.
In “Money, it’s pre-evil”, you will surely recognize some Queen and Pink Floyd influences, with a smashing guitar solo in the middle part.
And I can go on for every track, quoting the whole rock encyclopaedia from ACDC to Led Zeppelin. The question is, of course, what about the Bigelf sound? Do they have an own sound or do they just mix older music? And strangely enough, but the mix of all these influences creates a recognizable Bigelf sound.
The main character of the band is of course, singer, keyboard player Damon Fox, with his high hat and his arms spread between his keyboards, gazing at the audience with his black painted eyes and singing his heart out. He’s quite a figure and certainly the image of the band. He is like a singing Jon Lord.
The album closes with an 11 minutes epic, “Counting Sheep”, which is a perfect ending for an album that opened with “The Gravest Show on Earth”. An epic track filled with humour (e.g. there is an opera part where they sing along with the sheep), theatrical elements and a ‘Whole lotta love’ chaotic ending.
You really got to hear this to believe it. They toured with Dream Theater during the fall of 2009 but I would like to see a complete show of the guys. It must be quite an experience. Back to the future!!



Na het beluisteren van Bigelf, denk ik, dat vele groepen, die beweren dat ze Classic Rock brengen, hun instrumenten mogen opbergen, want dit is pas de echte, pure Classic Rock. Dit album is een encyclopedie van de rockmuziek, een wandeling door de geschiedenis van de rock.
Het eerste nummer, “The Gravest Show on Earth”, opent het album in echte “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” stijl. Het bevat dezelfde harmonische zang, vele ongewone muzikale wendingen en het nodigt iedereen uit om te komen luisteren naar een fabelachtige, theatrale show.
“Blackball” kon van Black Sabbath geweest zijn, vooral door de stem van Damon Fox, de een “Ozzy” timbre heeft. Het middenstuk opent een doos met blues clichés en de combinatie met de sax geeft het einde nog een Pink Floyd gevoel. Zelfs The Doors loeren om de hoek door een “Riders on the Storm” sfeertje. (vooral tijdens het Fender Rhodes stukje)
In “Money, it’s pre-evil” zal je zeker enkele Queen en Pink Floyd invloeden herkennen met een verpletterende gitaarsolo in het middenstuk.
En zo kan ik doorgaan met voor elk nummer, namen te citeren uit de ganse rock encyclopedie van ACDC tot Led Zeppelin. De vraag is natuurlijk, is er nog een Bigelf geluid? Hebben ze hun eigen stijl of maken ze enkel een mix van oudere muziek? En eigenaardig genoeg, creëert juist die mix een herkenbaar Bigelf geluid.
Het voornaamste lid van de groep is natuurlijk, frontman, zanger en toetsenist Damon Fox, die, met zijn hoge hoed en zijn armen opengespreid tussen zijn keyboards, naar het publiek kijkt met zijn zwart beschilderde ogen en ondertussen het publiek in de ban van zijn stem brengt. Hij is een opvalled figuur en meteen ook het imago van de groep. Ik noem hem een zingende Jon Lord.
Dit meesterwerkje wordt nog briljant afgesloten met een epos van 11 minuten, “Counting Sheep”, die een perfecte afsluiter is voor een album dat opent met een nummer als “The Gravest Show on Earth”. Een episch nummer vol met humor (in het middenstuk is er bijvoorbeeld een operagedeelte waar ze samen zingen met de schapen), theatrale elementen en een ‘Whole lotta love’ chaotisch einde.
Je moet dit horen om het te geloven. Ze toerden tijdens de herfst van 2009 nog met Dream Theater, maar ik zou liever eens een complete show meemaken. Het moet een hele ervaring zijn. ‘Back to the Future’!!!
