The guys of Sieges Even apparently have not waited as long as before with the sequel to 'Art of navigating by the stars', and given the quality of the latter, they have made the right decision. 'Paramount' will again score very high, although they may perhaps reach another audience. On their last album there where many traces of progressive metal, now it is more focused to AOR and heavy progressive rock. Anyway, the strength of the band regardless of the genre remains always the same: the voice of Arno Menses, a creative rhythm section, excellent guitar riffs coupled with nice melodies and harmonies. The song of Arno is a mix between Kansas and Rush, what a beautiful voice that man has. It is also striking how rich the music of Sieges Even sounds without the presence of any keyboards, really a unique phenomenon in this genre. You will not find very long songs on Paramount, there is clearly chosen for the melody and the composition… can you give them wrong?

The choruses are often very catchy as in Eyes Wide Open, a track that will remain in your head after the first listening. This is rather a blend of Saga and Rush, the pleasant voice of Arno make it a song with hit potential. Over the entire album you can hear beautiful bass lines, such as the poppy sounding 'Iconic'. However, it sounds heavier at times, listen for instance to the beginning of Leftovers, harmonies à la Crosby, Stills & Nash make it sound more melodic, varied with influences from Kansas. Most of the songs have a beautiful building up with a perfect balance between hard and soft passages. The title track is built around a speech by Martin Luther King (I have a dream), and although it sounds very original in the beginning, after a while it is perhaps too repetitive to stay captivating, they could have developed this idea in a better way. Also in the latest track they refer to statements by famous people, in this case to JF Kennedy. The rocking guitar is again in contrast with the emotional voice of Arno, adding saxophone gives this one a Supertramp feeling, but it also contains snatches of progressive metal.

And that last point could cost them perhaps some fans of the first hour, because as I said before it all sounds more melodic. Maybe their fans will have to get used to the new style, this German group has really a lot of talent. Once again this is an excellent production from the Inside Out label, which undoubtedly will find its place in your CD collection.




De jongens van Sieges Even hebben blijkbaar niet zo lang gewacht met de opvolger van ‘Art of navigating by the stars’ dan voorheen, gezien de kwaliteit van deze laatste hebben ze overschot van gelijk. Ook ‘Paramount’ zal weer hoge ogen gooien, alhoewel zij zich misschien toch op een ander publiek richten. Want waar hun vorig album nog vele sporen van progressieve metal vertoonden, ligt nu de klemtoon meer op AOR en heavy progressieve rock. In ieder geval blijven de sterke punten van de band ongeacht het genre steeds overeind: de aalgladde stem van Arno Menses, een stevige maar creatieve ritmesectie, uitstekende gitaarriffs, gekoppeld aan prachtiger melodieën en samenzang. De zang van Arno is een kruising tussen Kansas en Rush, wat een prachtige stem heeft die man. Het blijft ook opvallend hoe rijk de muziek van Sieges Even klinkt zonder keyboards, voorwaar een unicum in dit genre. Echt lange nummers zal je trouwens op Paramount niet vinden, er is duidelijk geopteerd voor de melodie en de compositie…kan je ze ongelijk geven?

De refreinen zijn vaak erg catchy zoals in Eyes Wide Open, een nummer dat in je hoofd blijft spoken na één beluistering. Dit is eerder een mix van Saga en Rush, waarin Arno met zoetgevooisde stem een nummer met hitpotentie brengt. Over het ganse album heen hoor je schitterende baslijnen, zoals het bij momenten poppy klinkende ‘Iconic’. Toch gaat het er soms nog wel steviger aan toe, luister maar naar het begin van Leftovers, maar samenzang à la Crosby, Stills & Nash geeft het dan weer een melodieuze draai met ook steeds weer die invloeden van Kansas. De meeste nummers hebben trouwens een mooie opbouw met een perfecte balans tussen harde en zachte passages. De titeltrack is gebouwd rond de toespraak van Martin Luther King (I have a dream), en alhoewel het in het begin vrij origineel klinkt, wordt het na een tijdje te repetitief om te blijven boeien, dit idee hadden ze volgens mij iets beter kunnen uitwerken. Ook in het laatste nummer wordt gerefereerd naar uitspraken van beroemde mensen, in dit geval naar JF Kennedy. De rockende gitaar staat weer in schril contrast met de emotionele stem van Arno, de toevoeging van saxofoon geeft dit nummer eventjes een Supertramp-gevoel, maar het bevat duidelijk ook flarden van de progressieve metal, die op vroegere albums meer aanwezig was.

En dat laatste zou hen misschien wel wat fans van het eerste uur kunnen kosten, want zoals gezegd klinkt het allemaal wat melodieuzer. Misschien zullen nieuwe fans hun wagonnetje aanhaken, want deze Duitse groep heeft echt wel wat in zijn mars. Opnieuw een uitstekende productie uit de Inside Out-stal, die zonder meer zijn plaats zal vinden in je cd-collectie.
