Actually I didn’t read so many reactions on the going bankrupt of the mighty and famous SPV label, seen from the bands’ point of view. Annihilator should have seen it coming, Metal Church was incensed and called it quits, but also Pain Of Salvation had to cancel an American tour with Dream Theater. On top of this their next album was postponed until 2010 – it will be a double CD – and for the moment we have to be content with a MCD with six songs.

‘Linoleum’ contains six exclusive tracks you will not find on ‘Road Salt’ (the upcoming double CD). One of them is a kind of joke. ‘Bonus Track B’ is an extremely funny conversation between the band members about deciding what to add as bonus, all this presented in the typical tongue in cheek style of the band. In this respect one can conclude that ‘Yellow Raven’ appears to be the bonus track, since it is a proper Pain Of Salvation version of this Scorpions song, originally coming from the ‘Virgin Killer’ album. They stay rather close to the original, but of course the voice of Gildenlöw cannot be compared with the slightly nasal sounds of Klaus Meine.

The question and what matters are the four new-written songs. Like we are used of these Swedes, an open mind is needed. ‘Linoleum’ excels with extremely creamy riffs and juicy keyboards. Do we hear some Beatles influences? Anyway, in their most revolutionary period. Naturally we have Daniel Gildenlöw’s vocals. He wanders through the instrumental intricacies with the flair of a tormented poet. Sometimes raucous and screaming, a bit later honeyed and resigned. This is a stunner with perfect doses of rage and escapism. ‘Mortar Grind’ starts calm, but turns into an intense scream from time to time. It sounds as emotional as a black blues singer in ‘If You Wait’ (not my favourite) and ‘Gone’ (the highlight) is an intense and semi-spoken cry of despair. Add loads of unconventional sounds and you have it. It is fine how Pain Of Salvation masters to create an unique sound while sticking to a kind of vintage sound. This aperitif will be relished by the fans.



In feite is er vanuit het gezichtspunt van de bands tot hier toe niet zo heel veel reactie geweest op het failliet gaan van het grote en befaamde SPV. Annihilator zou de bui hebben zien hangen, Metal Church gooide gefrustreerd de handdoek in de ring, maar ook Pain Of Salvation moest een Amerikaanse tournee met Dream Theater laten schieten. Bovendien werd hun volgend album uitgesteld tot 2010 – dat zou dan wel een dubbel-cd worden – en moeten we nu even genoegen nemen met een mini cd met zes nummers.

‘Linoleum’ bevat zes exclusieve tracks die niet op ‘Road Salt’ (de aanstaande dubbelaar) te vinden zullen zijn. Eén daarvan is eerder een geintje. ‘Bonus Track B’ is een bijzonder amusant gesprek tussen de bandleden over wat men als bonus gaat presenteren, geheel in de droge-humor-stijl waar de band berucht voor is. In die optiek kunnen we besluiten dat ‘Yellow Raven’ het ware toemaatje is, want dat is een typische Pain Of Salvation versie van dit Scorpions nummer uit het album ‘Virgin Killer’. Er wordt vrij dicht bij het origineel gebleven, al is de stem van Gildenlöw natuurlijk in de verste verte niet te vergelijken met het licht nasale geluid van Klaus Meine.

Waar het om gaat zijn de vier nieuwe eigen nummers. Zoals we dat gewend zijn van de Zweden, is een open geest bij beluistering vereist. ‘Linoleum’ excelleert met bijzonder romige riffs en smeuïge toetsen. Horen we daar een Beatles invloed? Maar dan in hun meest revolutionaire momenten. Dan is er natuurlijk de zang van Daniel Gildenlöw. Hij laveert tussen de instrumentale basis als een getormenteerd dichter, soms ruw en schreeuwend, maar even later poeslief en berustend. Dit is al een wereldnummer met een perfecte dosis woede en escapisme. ‘Mortar Grind’ vangt kalm aan, maar verwordt bij momenten tot een intense schreeuwpartij. Even emotioneel als een zwarte blueszanger in ‘If You Wait’ (het minste nummer) en daarna een heel intense en half gesproken wanhoopskreet ‘Gone’ (het hoogtepunt!). Denk daar maar vast heel wat onconventionele geluidjes bij. Mooi hoe Pain Of Salvation met een vintage klank toch in staat is om een absoluut uniek geluid te creëren. Dit aperitief zal de fans uitstekend smaken.
