“Kahden Kuun Sirpit” is the second release by the Finnish band Viima. The recording of the album took two years, although only four songs made in on the album. Eye catcher is without any doubt the title song and final track “Kahden Kuun Sirpit” (nearly 23 minutes). In this very spacey song the band tells us, in Finnish, the history of the Finnish city of Turku and its citizens. What, in Finnish? No panic, in the well designed and attractive booklet all the Finnish lyrics are translated into English. Viima provides with this release attractive, mellow and well crafted songs. The overall sound is very seventies and some of the songs do include some folk elements. In most of the songs the flute is the dominating instrument. The members of Viima seem to have listened very carefully to Camel. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes the band tends to sound like a Finnish Camel tribute band. Luckily also bands like Kaipa, Kansas and Tull seem to have influenced the band. Perhaps the band is still looking for its own style and needs more time to create a unique sound. Apart from the flute also the keys play a very important role in the progressive sound of Viima. A variety of keyboards are used, including Mellotron, analogue synths, Hammond, grand and Rhodes piano. Every note counts. There is no showing off here. I personally do regret that the female vocals on the first release are not here. Hiltula’s vocals, although overall ok, are a little flat at times and lack emotion. The album could also be a bit more powerful and dynamic. But let’s end with a positive note. This surely is an interesting release for anyone who likes the softer side of symphonic rock. If you are searching for the spacey and melodic sound of prog bands like Camel, then this one is for you.



“Kahden Kuun Sirpit” is de tweede worp van de Finse formatie Viima. De opnames duurden meer dan twee jaar en dat voor vier songs. Blikvanger op het album is ongetwijfeld de epische afsluiter (bijna 23 minuten) en tevens het titelnummer “Kahden Kuun Sirpit”. Het nummer klinkt erg spacy en vertelt, in het Fins, het verhaal van de Finse stad Turku en haar inwoners. In het Fins? Geen paniek, het album bevat een mooi uitgegeven boekje waarin de Finse teksten netjes vertaald worden in het Engels. Het album barst van de fijne melodieën en muziekjes. Alles klinkt erg seventies en hier en daar worden er folk elementen aan toegevoegd. Zo is de fluit vaak zeer dominant aanwezig in het gros van de songs. De heren van Viima hebben blijkbaar zeer goed naar Camel geluisterd. Toch moeten de heren opletten niet te dicht in de buurt te komen van hun grote voorbeeld. Soms lijkt het wel Camel in het Fins. Gelukkig strooit de band ook wat met Kaipa, Kansas en Tull invloeden zodat het geheel toch nog een eigen sound krijgt. Misschien zijn de heren nog op zoek naar een eigen geluid en hebben ze gewoon wat tijd nodig om te groeien. Naast de fluit bepalen ook de toetsen de sfeer van het album. We horen Mellotron, analoge synths, Hammond, Rhodes en Grand piano. Gelukkig weten de muzikanten zich te beheersen en wordt er nergens aan “kijk eens mama hoe snel ik kan spelen” gedacht. Neen, de heren van Viima laten voldoende ruimte om iedere noot tot zijn recht te laten komen. Dit geeft het album een rijk en atmosferisch geluid. Ik vind het ook jammer dat de band de vrouwelijke vocalen op het eerste album heeft ingeruild voor een mannelijke stem. Hannu Hiltula zingt niet slecht, maar soms is zijn stembereik iets te beperkt waardoor emotie en klankkleur soms ontbreken. Ook mist het album soms wat pit en dynamiek. Genoeg gezeurd. Dit album verdient zeker en vast je aandacht. “Kahden Kuun Sirpit” is zonder de minste twijfel een aanwinst voor iedereen die houdt van de zachtere kant van de progmedaille en heimwee heeft naar de symfonische rockparels uit de jaren 70.
