Apple Pie is a Russian band founded in 2000 in the city Kursk. Before releasing this debut album lots of members came and went. It took them some time to find the current line up. This could have been one of the reasons it took the band so long before releasing their first album. The band wanted to be absolutely ‘ready’ before releasing their debut: the right songs, perfect arrangements and an acceptable budget to put the ideas in a decent way on CD. And this album is an absolute winner. Apple Pie is without any doubt a new gem on the Russian prog-rock scene. Some consider them being the missing link between Dream Theater and Spock’s Beard. Others accuse them of being a little bit too Spock’s Beardian. Also the lyrics refer a lot to the Bible (Morse). For me they are just a fantastic band! The story behind the album is a concept about doubts and choices between good and evil every person has to make in his life. Sounds very Morse. but who cares. I quite like the idea and I am convinced progressive rock fans will surely give this eclectic and warm album a fair chance. The album sounds very professional, modern and dynamic. These guys surely know how to write great progressive rock songs. Also lead vocalist (and guitarist) Vartan Mkhitaryan is a brilliant singer. For a non-native English speaker, Vartan’s vocals are perfectly pronounced. The album has it all: beautiful guitar solo’s, great soundscapes, moving acoustic interludes and epic ballads. If you always wanted to know what Spock’s Beard would have sounded like if Neal Morse was still in the band, well… Apple Pie gives you the answer. This album is highly recommended to any progressive rock fan. Stunning release!



Apple Pie is een Russische band die werd opgericht in 2000 in Kursk. Dit viertal kende in de aanloop van het maken van dit album vele personeelswisselingen. Misschien was dit de oorzaak dat de heren ruim de tijd namen om dit debuutalbum uit te brengen. Kan best, maar de hoofdreden is volgens mij zonder de minste twijfel dat de band pas een album wilde uitbrengen wanneer de tijd daar echt rijp voor was: voldoende goede songs en genoeg budget om de ideeën ook op cd te kunnen gooien. En laat ik maar ineens alle twijfels wegnemen, dit debuutalbum is een knaller. Apple Pie lijkt wel de ontbrekende schakel tussen Dream Theater en Spock’s Beard. Soms klinkt de band wel erg als The Beard (Morse tijdperk). Ook de teksten zitten boordevol Christelijke verwijzingen. Het hele album is een zoektocht naar keuzes die je voortdurend moet maken in je leven tussen goed en kwaad. Uiteindelijk slaat de slinger door naar de goede kant. Klinkt allemaal heel Morse, niet? Ik hou wel van dit soort teksten en ik denk dat niemand er zich zodanig aan zal ergeren dat hij daarom afhaakt. Want “Crossroads” is een juweel van een album. De heren beheersen het schrijven van echte songs tot in de puntjes en vonden een perfecte balans tussen stem en instrumenten. Wat enorm opvalt, is het haast vlekkeloze Engels van leadzanger Vartan Mkhitaryan. Het album omvat het hele progressieve pallet: prachtige gitaarsolo’s, met enorm veel gevoel gespeeld, hemelse soundscapes, heerlijke tempowisselingen en een fraaie epic als afsluiter. Wie wil weten hoe Spock’s Beard zou klinken mocht Neal Morse nog steeds deel uitmaken van deze unieke band, vindt hier het antwoord. Dit album is een dikke aanrader voor iedereen die van progressieve rock houdt. Blindelings aanschaffen en genieten!
