Gazpacho (from Norway) have always been a bit pioneers on the Internet, by presenting their music as free downloads, as long as you tell them who you are. And they are convinced, their music can make people buy their stuff after all. And it works, because they sell more and more albums and have a very fast growing fan base. After four great albums, of which “Bravo” and “Night” are my favorites, there’s now the fifth coming of the band, “Tick Tock” and it has found its way into my favorites in no time.
It’s a concept album about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who took off in an attempt at a long distance flight from Paris to Saigon in 1935. He crashed in the desert and later wrote a book about it, “Wind, Sand and Stars”. And now Gazpacho adds some music to the story.
Although they have their own Gazpacho sound, references are made to Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Muse and of course, Marillion.(with Steve Hogarth)
The opening track, “Desert Flight” is a lot heavier than we are used to hear from Gazpacho. Of course, the “heavy” stays within the Gazpacho standards and stays far away from any metal sound. It’s just a track with a lot more rhythm and drums than they normally use. It’s a great track which ends with a quieter soundscape which fades into the sound of the desert storm and takes us into “The Walk”. This second track is more in the vein of older Gazpacho tracks, but the drummer is a lot busier than on previous albums and it certainly pays off. After the beautiful sung first part (what a voice Jan-Henrik has), there’s a beautiful melodic piece with the violin, followed by some Eastern sounding music, to end the first part of “The Walk”. (I wonder why this was split up in two parts.) “The Walk” part 2 is mostly acoustic and relaxing, with a groove that makes you dream away.
The title track lasts for 22 minutes (split in 3 parts) and is carried by the tick tock sound of a clock. This sound is always present, but when the music gets louder you tend to forget about it. In quieter parts, it’s back and you realize, it has always been there and it is in fact the driving force behind the music. 22 minutes of top notch music, filled with melodic vocal parts, instrumental emotions, a male choir and a lot more, which words can’t really describe. If you don’t get goose bumps by this music, there’s something wrong with you.
The album ends with the first single, which will be taken from the album, “Winter is Never”. It’s actually the only track that’s shorter than five minutes. It’s a beautiful song, with very high vocals and a very melodic chorus. I hope the radio stations will pick it up and give it some airplay, because this band deserves to get higher. Don’t miss them on their next tour.



Gazpacho (uit Noorwegen) was altijd al een pionier om via het Internet, hun muziek gratis aan te bieden, zolang je hen maar vertelt wie je bent. En ze zijn overtuigd dat de muziek de mensen kan overhalen om alsnog de CD te kopen. En het lijkt nog te werken ook, want ze verkopen meer en meer albums en ze hebben een snel groeiende schare fans. Na 4 prachtige albums, waarvan “Bravo” en “Night” mijn favorieten zijn, verschijnt er nu hun vijfde uitgave, “Tick Tock” die al heel vlug de weg naar mijn favorieten vond.

Zijn toestel stortte echter neer in de woestijn en hij schreef een later een boek over met de titel “Wind, Sand and Stars”. En nu voegt Gazpacho ook nog muziek toe aan het verhaal.
Hoewel ze hun eigen Gazpacho geluid handhaven, kan je toch referenties leggen naar groepen zoals Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Muse en natuurlijk Marillion.(met Steve Hogarth)
Het openingsnummer, “Desert Flight” is heel wat harder dan wat we gewoon zijn van Gazpacho. Natuurlijk blijft dat “harde” binnen de Gazpacho normen en blijven ze ver weg van een metal geluid. Het gaat er vooral om dat het nummer meer ritme en drumwerk dan gewoonlijk bevat. Het is een prachtig nummer dat eindigt met een kalme soundscape die dan weer overgaat naar een woestijnstorm die als overgang dienst doet naar “The Walk” Dit nummer lijkt wat meer op ouder Gazpacho werk, maar de drummer blijft toch drukker bezig dan op vorige albums en dat kan ik alleen maar positief noemen.
Na het prachtig gezongen eerste stuk (wat een stem heeft die Jan-Hendrik) komt een schitterend melodieus staaltje vioolvakmanschap, gevolgd door een Oosters klinkend muziekje als afsluiter van het eerste deel van “The Walk”. (Ik vraag me af waarom het nummer in twee verdeeld werd.) “The Walk” deel 2 is vooral akoestisch en “relaxing” met een groove die je doet wegdromen.
Het titelnummer duurt 22 minuten (verdeeld over 3 delen) en wordt gedragen door het getik van een uurwerk. Dit geluid is steeds aanwezig, maar als de muziek luider wordt, lijk je het te vergeten. Tijdens de kalmere gedeeltes, is het plots terug en besef je dat het nooit is weggeweest en dat het de drijvende kracht is achter deze muziek. 22 minuten muziek van de bovenste plank, gevuld met melodieuze zangpartijen, instrumentale emoties, een mannenkoor en nog veel meer, dat met woorden niet echt te beschrijven is. Als deze muziek jou geen kippenvel bezorgt dan is er iets mis met je.
Het album eindigt met de eerste single die ze van het album zullen uitbrengen, “Winter is Never”. Het is het enige nummer dat de kaap van de 5 minuten niet overschrijdt. Een prachtig nummer met zeer hoge vocalen en een zeer melodieus refrein. Hopelijk pikken de radiostations dit op want deze groep verdient het om hogerop te geraken. Mis ze zeker niet tijdens hun komende optredens.
