With 5 studio albums under their belt, a reputation to be kept high and just after the release of the bands magnum opus (SI), the gentlemen of Nemo went into the studio. Expectations were high. Could this French quartet, let by JP Louveton, come up with an album that would not disappoint both fans and critics? Let’s put it clear from the start. Yes they could. This sixth release “Barbares” shines bright. “Barbares” is one of the best progressive rock albums released so far this year. I think the album will make it into my “best of 2009” list.

Nemo delivers a great mix of progressive rock (eclectic and modern - the keys are dominant in the mix) and French popular and traditional music. The band was established in 1999 but still sounds young and fresh. The music of Nemo is clearly influenced by Dream Theater and Rush, but also mixes fusion, jazz and folk music to come up with a unique sound. Band leader JP Louveton is responsible for both the guitar and the lead vocals (JP has a bit of Petrucci in him). His singing is (to say the least) less impressive than his guitar playing. JP’s voice simply is too thin. I think a better vocalist would add something extra to the narrative and complex music of these French progressive rock masters. But ok, it still are usually the (numerous) instrumental and complex parts where the talent of the band shines the brightest. The final (title) song is a brilliant epic (nearly 26 minutes) in which all previous themes come together in a great progressive masterpiece. This album is getting better and better with the next time you listen to it. “Barbares” may not be a milestone, it is highly recommended for anyone who is looking for a modern sounding rock album. Nemo is without any doubt one of the best rock bands to come out of France.

Met 5 studio albums onder de gordel, een stevige reputatie hoog te houden en met een alom bejubeld meesterwerk (Si – 2006/2007) net achter de rug, trokken de heren van Nemo de studio in. Dit viertal van meestermuzikanten, onder leiding van JP Louveton, had dus met dit zesde werkstuk heel wat te verliezen. Konden de heren de hoge verwachtingen inlossen bij zowel fans als journalisten? En laat mij maar ineens met de deur in huis vallen. Dit zesde studio album is een echt prijsbeest geworden. “Barbares” past zonder de minste twijfel in het rijtje van heerlijke progressieve albums die er dit jaar reeds verschenen. Ik denk dat men met sterke troeven voor de dag zal moeten komen om deze cd uit mijn eindejaarslijstje te houden.

Deze Franse band brengt een heerlijke mix van progressieve muziek (in een modern jasje) en Franse traditionele populaire muziek. Nemo werd in 1999 opgericht en klinkt nog steeds even fris. Al zijn er duidelijke invloeden van Rush en Dream Theater en zijn de heren niet vies van enige jazz en fusion akkoorden, toch hebben deze jongens altijd een eigen sound gehad. En dat is deze keer niet anders. Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik een echte fan ben van het gitaarwerk van JP Louveton. Je hoort duidelijk de heerlijke Petrucci sound in zijn gitaarwerk. JP Louveton tekent ook voor de vocalen. En daar ben ik niet altijd zo enthousiast over. Ik blijf het moeilijk vinden om rock te horen in het Frans. Al werkt het hier niet echt storend, toch biedt het ook geen meerwaarde. Misschien is de stem van JP ook iets te dun om al dit prog geweld te dragen? Daarom vind ik ook de talrijke instrumentale passage in de songs het beste. Hier is het werkelijk genieten. Vooral het machtige en epische sluitstuk “Barbares” (bijna 26 min) is wondermooi. Het nummer bestaat uit 7 delen en vat het album prachtig samen. “Barbares” is misschien geen mijlpaal maar het album is zonder enige twijfel van harte aanbevolen voor iedereen die progressieve muziek een warm hart toedraagt. Ik heb enorm van dit album genoten.
