My first introduction to Pallas was in 1984 when the released the excellent album “The Sentinel”. Together with Marillion, IQ and Twelfth night, Pallas were the front runners of “the new wave of progressive rock”. The dreaded term neo-prog had yet to be invented. The first show of Pallas in the Netherlands, together with IQ in Paradiso, was a sublime prog fest. A night I never will forget, and I suspect the band won’t too.

After the show in Paradiso and the release of the album “The Wedge” things went very quiet around Pallas. Very quiet. When they started to release albums again in the late nineties I had lost interest. But now there's “moment to moment” in my DVD player. Time for a re-introduction!

The DVD is recorded in a nice theatre in Poland. The sounds quality and camerawork is excellent. The guys seem to have hardly changed; Alan Reeds hair is a bit shorter, Gream Murray has a bit less hair and Niall Mathewson doesn't seem to have changed at all. I think he is even wearing the same suit as that memorable night in Paradiso. Musically very little has changed too. The show opens with the power riffs of ”Warriors”, a fine versatile song. The next two songs, “Hide and Seek” and “Ghostdancers” are very melodic but not really surprising. What follows is a great sequence of youth sentiment; the old favourites “Cut and Run”, “Heart Attack” and “Queen of the Deep”. Especially the energetic version of “Queen of the Deep” impresses me. Up to now this song was only available n the bootleg-quality live album Arrive Alive from 1982. For the fans this song alone should be reason enough to buy the DVD. Next are a series of new songs that are not bad at all but hardly surprising. Only the song “Invincible” seems to stick out in a positive way. The concert is closed with an energetic version of Arrive Alive.

My re-introduction with Pallas is certainly no disappointment. The news songs sound good but it's the old ones that get my adrenaline flowing. I suspect though this is mainly because of nostalgic reasons. I only hoped for a bit more renewal and surprise in the new material. But it really doesn't matter; the guys obviously play with a lot of fun and energy and for the fans there's no reason not to buy this DVD. Still a very nice band, that Pallas!



Mijn eerste introductie met Pallas was in 1984 toen ze het uitstekende album “the Sentinel” uitbracht. Samen met Marillion, IQ en Twelfth Night vormde Pallas “the new wave of progressive rock'. Te gewraakte term “Neo-prog” moest nog worden uitgevonden. Het eerste optreden van Pallas in Nederland, het dubbelconcert met IQ in Paradiso, was een groot prog-feest. Een avond die ik nooit zal vergeten, en ik denk de band zelf ook niet.

Na het optreden in Paradiso en de release van het album “The Wedge” werd het stil rond Pallas. Erg stil. Toen ze eind jaren negentig weer platen gingen uitbrengen had ik mijn interesse in de band verloren. Nu ligt ineens de DVD ' moment to moment' voor mijn neus. Tijd voor een hernieuwde kennismaking!

The DVD is opgenomen in een sfeervol theater in Polen en meteen valt op dat de geluidskwaliteit en camerawerk dik in orde is. De heren lijken ook nauwelijks veranderd, Alan Reeds haar is was korter, Greame Murray heeft vooral wat minder haar, en gitarist Niall Mathewson lijkt helemaal niet veranderd. Volgens mij heeft hij zelfs hetzelfde pak aan als destijds in Paradiso. Ook muzikaal is er niet veel veranderd. Het optreden opent meteen sterk met de power riffs van “Warriors”, een krachtig en afwisselend nummer. De volgende 2 nummers; “Hide and seek” en “Ghostdancers” zijn melodieus maar weinig verassend. Daarna begint een voor mij prachtige serie jeugdsentiment; de oude krakers als “Cut and Run”, “Heart Attack” en “Queen of the Deep”. Vooral de energieke uitvoering van “Queen of the Deep” maakt indruk. Voorheen was dit nummer alleen verkrijgbaar op het bootleg kwaliteit live album “Arrive Alive” uit 1982. Voor de fans zal alleen dit nummer al reden genoeg zijn de DVD aan te schaffen.
Verder volgt nog een hele serie nieuwe nummers, die zeker niet slecht zijn maar waar de echte verassing ontbreekt. Alleen het nummer “Invincible” springt er wat mij betreft bovenuit. Het concert wordt afgesloten met een energieke uitvoering van “Arrive Alive”.

Mijn hernieuwde kennismaking met Pallas viel zeker niet tegen. De nieuw nummers klinken prima maar het zijn vooral de oude nummers die bij mij de adrenaline doen stromen maar waarschijnlijk liggen hier vooral nostalgische redenen aan ten grondslag. Ik had op iets meer vernieuwing gehoopt in het nieuwe materiaal. Maar wat maakt het eigenlijk ook uit; de heren spelen overduidelijk met veel plezier en energie en de fans kunnen deze DVD moeiteloos aanschaffen. Nog steeds een leuk bandje dat Pallas!
