You sometimes get those CDs that grab your attention from the very first moment…this solo project (The D Project) from Stephane Desbiens (guitarist from SENSE) is just that kind of CD. I must admit, the fantastic ‘Pink Floyd’ solo and atmosphere from the first song is what did it for me. But not too worry…there are more than enough solid and enjoyable songs on this wonderful symphonic, Progressive, Artrock album. ‘The Sagarmatha Dilemma’ isn’t Stephane’s only solo project. There were several other albums before this wonderful one was made.

The songs are, first and foremost, related to Pink Floyd. You can also hear influences from Echolyn in the title track, thanks to guest musician Brett Kull. The strongest plus point on the CD is the combination of the right build up and the fantastic solos. This guy is a great guitarist, both electric and acoustic, and knows how to push your buttons. The violin and cello pieces are also beautifully done by guest musicians. Stephane likes to throw some jazzy influences into the mix and it’s done so in just the right quantity. This brings us to the essence of any excellent album: that you must invest your time in composing solid songs. Sometimes there are solo projects that fall short of this. But this album certainly doesn’t. “Radio Sherpa” (which seems to be perfectly written for Derek Sherinian) seems to be too intense at first glance, but after listening to it more and more, you will learn to appreciate its value.
I’ve also noticed that Stephane really isn’t such a bad singer. On the contrary, I think his singing here is better than on the SENSE albums…
This album is, for me and up until now, one of the high points in Symphonic Rock of 2008. Don’t hesitate to give a good listen to this one. You’ll feel compelled to buy it…



Je hebt zo van die cd’s die vanaf het eerste moment je aandacht weten te trekken. Het solo project (The D Project) van Stephane Desbiens, gitarist van SENSE, is zo een album. Toegegeven, de verpletterende ‘Pink Floyd’ solo en dito sfeer uit het eerste nummer, heeft daar een enorme rol in gespeeld. Toch kan je op je beide oren slapen. De rest van het album heeft nog meer dan voldoende sterke songs om je ten volle te laten genieten van een ijzersterk symfonisch, progressief en artrock album. ‘The Sagarmatha Dilemma’ is niet Stephane’s soloproefstuk. Al meerdere albums gingen deze prachtige cd vooraf…

In hoofdzaak zijn de songs Pink Floyd gerelateerd. Doch mede dankzij de invloed en gastrol van bijvoorbeeld Brett Kull hoor je ook Echolyn invloeden in de titeltrack. Het sterkste pluspunt is echter de combinatie van de juiste opbouw en de overweldigende solo’s. Deze man weet de gevoelige snaar te raken, zowel elektrisch als akoestisch een enorm sterke gitarist dus. Ook de gastrollen die er weggelegd zijn voor viool en cello partijen zijn aangenaam en sfeervol. Dat Stephane niet vies is van wat jazzy invloeden maakt het alleen maar spannender en sterker maar nergens krijg je het ‘kijk mama zonder handen’ gevoel… wat ons meteen brengt tot de essentie van elk uitstekend album: steek voldoende tijd in het componeren van sterke songs. Iets waarin sommige soloprojecten dikwijls te kort schieten. Dit album dus duidelijk niet. Het speciaal op het lijf van Derek Sherinian geschreven: “Radio Sherpa” oogt in een eerste beluistering wat te intens, maar voor wie wat meer geduld heeft, zal ook dit nummer, na enige tijd zijn waarde ontluisteren.
Wat me ook opvalt, is dat Stephane zeker geen slechte zanger is, integendeel, ik vind zelfs zijn zang beter dan wat we dikwijls te horen krijgen op de SENSE albums…

Voor mij is dit album één van de hoogtepunten van dit jaar (tot nog toe) op het symfonische rock gebied. Aarzel dus niet om dit album aan een deftige luisterbeurt te onderwerpen, maar ik twijfel niet dat je dan tot aankoop zult overgaan…
