The Tangent, the project of Andy Tillison, has released now already the fourth studio album. He does still rely on bassist Jonas Reingold, drummer Jaime Salazar and Guy Manning, on guitar Krister Jonsson has been replaced by Jakko M Jakszyk. The latter has done a lot of studio work, he made some solo albums but he will perhaps especially been known among the general public due to his contribution to Level 42. Ex-partner Sam Baines has also disappeared from the scene, the female voice is in the hands of Julie King.
And apparently the creative ability of Tillison is not yet exhausted, because he has not only delivered a double cd, but in a special edition also a book of 100 pages, beautifully illustrated by the young Antoine Ettori. It is therefore no surprise that 'Not as good as the book " is a concept album, in which the problems associated with midlife crisis is the main theme, really something for progressive rockers.
The new line-up has had a big effect on the group, Roine Stolt is obviously a great musician, but I think his impact on the overall sound was too big, and Krister Jonsson had perhaps too little charisma. I won’t discuss the personal troubles with Sam Baines, but no doubt those events gave a lot of inspiration. Of course, the recipe broadly still the same, modern progressive rock with influences from the 70's, but next to the jazzy passages, there are also moments, in which the musicians are really rockin’. The starting track 'A midlife crisis' sounds contrary to what the title suggests very happy and shows immediately that other face of The Tangent. Then 'Lost in London' comes closer to the previous albums, the flute and saxophone play the main role, you get back that sense of Canterbury, especially when the musicians are playing freaking jazz in the middle of the song. And it really shows all musicians in all their glory, because The Tangent is actually packed with tons of talent. Maybe here and there will be some critical notes about the voice of Andy Tillison, but I think his voice is very suitable for this particular kind of music, I can’t imagine another singer. But the real strength lies above all in the strong arrangements with surprising twists and moods, moreover perfectly accompanied by socially inspired texts.

The Ethernet is a track, which differs from the normal pattern of Tangent. The electronic input and the bass lines reminds of Peter Gabriel, the intermediate parts more to Genesis. We are already acquainted with the technical qualities of most of the musicians, only Jakko Jakszyk is perhaps less well known, though he also was part of 21st Century Schizoid Band. And the man proves that he really can handle many different styles, from jazz to shredding on Gilmouresk guitar lines. Celebrity Puree shows again some instrumental jazz fusion, in which the great rhythm section Reingold / Salazar is in great shape. The title track is a very surprising flamenco passage, in which Guy Manning on acoustic guitar and Andy on moog show their abilities. Jakko takes the lead vocals on his behalf and does it excellently.

'A sale of two souls' is a very quiet song, but both vocal and instrumental with a certain dark edge, then the song degenerates into pure VDGG style to return in a slower pace. The biker song 'Bat Out of Basildon' is a mix between blues and hard rock, in which the saxophone play of Theo Travis, the Hammond of Andy and the screaming guitars complement each other beautifully.
And then the epics are yet to come. Four Egos, One War is a very committed song, dealing with the war. This is a perfect example of a progressive work, swirling passages alternating with very introverted pieces, where the sweet voice of Julie King also plays an important part in it. Musically it reminds me of Transatlantic. The same applies perhaps to a lesser degree for The Full Gamut, this is more a cross between Spock's Beard and VDGG. You should just undergo these tracks, so much is happening here, which makes it difficult to express it in a few words
'Not as good as the book" is the best album of The Tangent so far, and I suspect that Andy Tillison has a lot more to offer in het future. This album is recommended stuff for each prog lover. And I am also looking forward to the forthcoming tour in 2008.



The Tangent, het project van Andy Tillison, is intussen al aan het vierde studio-album toe. Hij doet nog steeds beroep op bassist Jonas Reingold, drummer Jaime Salazar en Guy Manning, op gitaar werd Krister Jonsson vervangen door Jakko M Jakszyk. Deze laatste heeft vooral veel studiowerk verricht, maakte ook enkele solo-albums maar zal misschien vooral bij het publiek bekend zijn vanwege zijn inbreng bij Level 42. Ex-partner Sam Baines is ook van het toneel verdwenen, de vrouwelijke zang is in handen van Julie King.

En blijkbaar was het creatief vermogen van Tillison bijlange nog niet opgebruikt, want niet alleen laat hij een dubbelcd op de wereld los, maar daarnaast zit er bij de speciale editie nog een boek van 100 pagina’s, prachtig geïllustreerd door de jonge Antoine Ettori. Het hoeft derhalve niet te verwonderen dat ‘Not as good as the book’ een totaalconcept vormt, waarin de problemen, die gepaard gaan met midlife-crisis, centraal staan. Echt iets voor progressieve rockers dus.

De nieuwe line-up heeft een heilzame werking gehad op de groep, let wel, Roine Stolt is uiteraard een fantastisch muzikant, maar had volgens mij een te grote impact op de totaalsound. En Krister Jonsson had misschien net iets te weinig uitstraling. Over de liefdesperikelen met Sam Baines zal ik hier niet uitweiden, maar ongetwijfeld heeft dit ook heel wat inspiratie opgeleverd. Uiteraard is het recept in grote lijnen nog hetzelfde, moderne progressieve rock met invloeden van de jaren 70, maar naast de nog steeds jazzy passages zijn er ook momenten, waarop de muzikanten stevig rocken. De begintrack ‘A crisis in midlife’ klinkt in tegenstelling tot wat de titel laat vermoeden heel opgewekt en laat onmiddellijk dat andere gezicht van The Tangent horen. Dan sluit ‘Lost in London’ meer aan op de vorige albums, wanneer de dwarsfluit en saxofoon meer op de voorgrond treden, krijg je weer dat Canterbury-gevoel, vooral ook wanneer de muzikanten in het midden van het nummer een frivool stukje jazz opvoeren. En hierin schitteren werkelijk alle muzikanten, want The Tangent zit werkelijk boordevol talent. Wellicht zullen hier en daar weer wat kritische noten worden geplaatst bij de stem van Andy Tillison, maar ik vind zijn stem bijzonder geknipt voor dit soort muziek, ik kan er mij geen enkele andere zanger bij voorstellen. Maar de grote kracht ligt toch vooral in de sterke arrangementen vol verrassende wendingen en gemoedstoestanden, overigens perfect begeleid door maatschappijkritische teksten.

The Ethernet is één die nummers, die wat afwijken van het normale Tangent-patroon. Door de elektronische inbreng en de baslijnen heeft het wat weg van Peter Gabriel, het tussenstuk heeft dan weer meer raakpunten met Genesis. Van de meeste muzikanten kenden we al de technische kwaliteiten, alleen Jakko Jakszyk is misschien iets minder bekend, alhoewel hij ook deel uitmaakte van 21st Century Schizoid Band. En de man bewijst hier dat hij inderdaad heel veel verschillende stijlen aankan, van shredding tot jazz over Gilmoureske gitaarlijnen, hij schijnt het allemaal aan te kunnen. Celebrity Puree laat de groep horen in instrumentale jazz fusion, waarin ook de fantastische ritmesectie Reingold/Salazar zich niet onbetuigd laat. In de titelsong komt ook heel verrassend een flamenco-passage, waarin Guy Manning op akoestische gitaar en Andy op moog leuke dingen laten horen. Jakko neemt de lead-zang voor zijn rekening en doet dit overigens uitstekend.

‘A sale of two souls’ is een heel rustig nummer, maar houdt zowel vocaal als instrumentaal een zekere dreiging in zich en ontaardt dan in pure VDGG-stijl om dan weer langzaam uit te dijen. De bikersong ‘Bat out of Basildon’ is de vreemde eend in de bijt met een kruising tussen blues en hard rock, waarin de saxofonpartijen van Theo Travis, de Hammond van Andy en de schreeuwerige gitaren elkaar prachtig aanvullen.

En dan moeten de epics nog komen. Four Egos, One War is een zeer geëngageerde song, handelend over de oorlog. Dit is een schoolvoorbeeld van een progressief werkstuk, wervelende passages afgewisseld met heel introverte stukken, waar de zoetgevooisde stem van Julie King ook een belangrijk aandeel in heeft. Muzikaal laat het me vooral aan Transatlantic denken. Hetzelfde geldt misschien in mindere mate voor The Full Gamut, dit is meer een kruising tussen Spock’s Beard en VDGG. Deze laatste nummers moet je gewoon ondergaan, want er gebeurt zoveel dat dit niet echt onder woorden te brengen valt.

‘Not as good as the book’ is het beste album van ‘The Tangent’ tot nog toe, en ik vermoed dat Andy Tillison nog meer konijnen uit zijn hoed kan toveren. Wie progressieve rock hoog in het vaandel draagt, moet dit album in zijn collectie hebben staan. En kijk ook uit naar de nakende tournee, want ook live is dit een groots feest.
