‘Artificial Joy’ is Taylor’s Universe second release in 2009 and ‘twenty somethingth’ album from Robin Taylor in less than twenty years. The exact number of releases by this Danish master brain and multi instrumentalist is very hard to find. Let’s put it this way: Taylor’s output is quiet impressive. The booklet says ‘for maximum effect, play this CD loud’, so that’s exactly what we did. The music immediately reminded me of the early seventies Canterbury symphonic stuff (Camel).

The heavy metal influence on the previous Taylor’s Universe releases is almost completely gone. Mainly due to the fact that guitarist Michael Denner (still on 2 tracks) has left space for new recruit Finn Olafsson from the legendary seventies progressive rock band Ache. Olaffson’s guitar playing is more atmospheric and eclectic and far less heavy. Also saxophone wizard Jakob Mygind is playing a dominant role on this album, giving this release a more jazz oriented flow.

Taylor’s Universe ‘Artificial Joy’ delivers challenging instrumental progressive rock residing somewhere within the borderlines of jazz rock, art rock and symphonic rock. Again a fine release by this Scandinavian sound wizard. Highly recommended.



‘Artificial Joy’ is het tweede album dat Taylor’s Universe, het project van de Deen Robin Taylor, in 2009 uitbrengt. Het aantal albums dat deze Scandinavische multi-instrumentalist en meesterbrein in minder dan 20 jaar tijd op de wereld heeft losgelaten, is nauwelijks bij te houden. In het bijhorende boekje staat dat we dit album heel luid moeten spelen en dat hebben we dan ook maar meteen gedaan. Het geluid van dit album bracht me vaak opnieuw naar de Canterbury sound van de jaren zeventig. De geest van Camel zit er duidelijk in.

Wat meteen opvalt in vergelijking met vorige albums die Taylor uitbracht onder Taylor’s Universe is het volledig verdwijnen van de metal invloeden. Ik vermoed dat het binnenhalen van gitarist Finn Ollaffson daar voor iets tussenzit. Olaffson kennen we nog van zijn legendarische 70ties progband Ache. Michael Denner, die nog op 2 nummers te horen is, durfde in het verleden al eens heavy uitpakken. Olaffson’s gitaarspel is meer atmosferisch en eclectisch. Ook saxofoontovenaar Jacob Mygind blaast hier op het voorplan, waardoor het album vaak een erg jazzy randje krijgt.

Wie houdt van een instrumentaal avontuurlijk progressief album dat langs de grenzen van jazz rock, art rock en symfonische muziek surft, kunnen we dit album van harte aanbevelen. Opnieuw een mooi album op het toch al indrukwekkende palmares van deze Deense geluidstovenaar.
