EASTWEST is een band die onststond in 2000, toen Nick Rothero begon te jammen met toetsenman Ian Stichbury en bassist Dave Davies. Bill Joyce voegde zich in 2004 bij de groep, toen hij oorspronkelijk drummer Ron Counte verving. Op het tweede album van de band, EyeWitness, heeft zanger/gitarist Nick Rothero een aantal knappe nummers geschreven, die gaan van vroege PINK FLOYD-achtige psychedelica tot late-jaren-’60 rock, een beetje folk en zelfs een DIRE STRAITS (‘Heavy Fuel’ / ‘Money For Nothing’) soundalike ‘Totalitarian Police State Blues’. Andere invloeden die je misschien herkent zijn GRATEFUL DEAD en het vroege WISHBONE ASH, terwijl ze zelf ook THE BYRDS en THE DOORS als inspiratie noemen. Onder de hoogtepunten het meerdelige ‘Lost Cities’, delen I & II en het introspectieve ‘Dead Summer’. Ze spelen ook twee covers: Nick Saloman’s ‘Portobello Man’ en een werkelijk schitterende versie van ‘Feeling Good’, een nummer dat oorspronkelijk komt uit de musical The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd en dat eerder al werd gecoverd door verschillende artiesten als Nina Simone, Sammy Davis Jr., MUSE en (hou je vast) PUSSYCAT DOLLS. Absoluut
een band om in het oog te houden. |
