Er zal wel niemand aan twijfelen dat Styx even goed als beroemd is: opgericht in 1972 – midden in de gouden jaren van de rock – en de trotse bezitters van een dubbel platina, een platina en maar liefst vijf gouden platen. Vorig jaar namen ze “I am the Walrus” van The Beatles op. Dat leverde hen een flinke radiohit op en dat succes bracht hen ertoe om een aantal legendarische nummers uit de jaren ’60 en ’70 opnieuw te gaan opnemen. Het resultaat is een perfect geproducete verzameling song die zowel vocaal als instrumentaal met een enorm vakmanschap gebracht worden. De interpretatie wijkt evenwel weinig af van de originelen wat de vraag naar de noodzaak van dit album doet rijzen. Bekende nummers spelen is heel leuk op een live optreden, maar thuis luisteren de meeste mensen liever naar originele uitvoeringen, denk ik. Eén groot verschil misschien: het is vreemd om “Locomotive Breath” te horen zonder de obligate dwarsfluit… “Blue Collar Man 2004” is een nieuwe studioversie van het enige eigen nummer op deze cd. De top 40 hit uit 1978 wordt gebracht met een mooie combinatie van piano en akoestische gitaar. |
