From
the recently released live registration of Brazen Abbot ‘A
Decade Of Brazen Abbot’ there is also a DVD version available.
With a few small differences in material (the keyboard and drum solo
are left away, but no one will mourn about that). Because the
recordings took place in Nicolo Kotzev’s home country Bulgaria, I
hoped to see some nice images of the locations in Varna, Plovdiv
(both open air amphitheatres) and Sofia, but this is not the case.
The
documentary part cannot be seen apart from the rest, but is divided
in between all the songs. This was no problem for me, because you
get a chronological story this way, but it may be a disadvantage for
some other people. First of all we have got the story of life of
Nicolo Kotzev: how he moved from Bulgaria to Finland in 1989 and
built his own studio there and he founded Brazen Abbot in 1994. Then
there are short interviews with all of the vocalists Nicolo worked
with through the years, amongst them famous singers such as Glen
Hughes, Jorn Lande and Joe Lynn Turner. Even the Europe musicians
are not missing in the documentary. Quite interesting is the
acoustic version of ‘Feeling Like A Rolling Stone’, a song which
reminded me of ‘Dead Or Alive’ of Bon Jovi. Another highlight is the
Bulgarian radio show where they played ‘Stone Cold’ (Rainbow).
Furthermore it is obvious that touring in Bulgaria has led to
technical problems, also because of the pouring rain and the open
air locations, but it was forgotten soon by the successful show in
Sofia. The biggest part of the DVD has been dedicated to the Deep
Purple/Rainbow alike music of the band, always good for a fine
evening. |
