nederlands Review

Age of Nemesis is a Hungarian progressive rock-metal band that formed as Nemesis in the summer of 1997. After releasing four albums in their native language, they released the album “Eden?” in English in 2002.

So the band has given itself a new name and signed with Magna Carta, which is certainly a golden opportunity for a fresh start. But you can’t really call this a new start as 8 of the 11 tracks come from their album “Abraxas” from 1999. This doesn’t really matter because the original album was in their native language and wasn’t really widely available in our region. And the quality of the music certainly made this translation and re-recording worthwhile.

The first six tracks are a concept called Psychogeist about a mother who searches her son, finds him totally confused and tries to find out what happened to him. A great story, played by excellent musicians. For these 6 tracks, the band found the perfect balance between heavier and softer pieces and complex and simple melodies. A story, full of emotion, sung and played with the right amount of emotion.
And the best is yet to come! The best tracks of this album are, in my opinion, the instrumental “Goddess Nemesis” and the superb track “Eye of the Snake”, two great progmetal tracks, full of great guitar and keyboard solos and, as on the whole album, an incredible Laszlo Nagy, who is drumming as if he was born with sticks in his hands.

Everything I said in my review of their previous album applies for this one too. This time, their technical skill is even more obvious. Zoltan isn’t a top singer, but I like his voice and his English is almost perfect.
I like this newest release from Hungary, but I slightly prefer their previous release, because it was more melodic and less complex. And maybe, it’s their style, but does the rhythm guitar need all that distortion all of the time?
After these translations and re-recordings of their older material, it’s time to hear something completely new from them!
Can’t wait!!!!
