The story of Lykaion starts in 2000 with the musicians Luca Mazzilli, Fabio Valentini, Adrea Aberati, Mimma Petrucci, Marco Minno and Fabrizio Oliva. In 2003, they recorded their first demo “The Equilibrium of the Hidden”. After some changes in the line-up, they recorded their second demo “Behind… a whisper” in 2005, with Alessandro Sorza on the guitar and Valerio Misferi on bass. The band is clearly influenced by Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Katatonia, Anathema, Novembre and many others. Musically and technically, Lykaion is a decent band, and the clean vocals of Luca Mazzilli give the songs a melancholic atmosphere. The songs flow seamlessly into one another, and you can hardly tell where a song ends and the next one begins. However, these four melodic-progressive metal songs aren't bad at all. “Secret of Life” starts pretty heavy, but just before Luca starts to sing, they calm down a bit to get heavy again later on. A calm passage gets us to “Reconstruct”, the second song. The band explodes in full power after a short while, and turns acoustic, just when the vocals begin. “Behind...” is an instrumental song, and it’s very calming, while “...a Whisper” is a continuation of “Behind...”, but heavier. Lykaion plans to enter the studio in April 2006, to record a full album, and they will be in the studio the whole month to record and master the CD. After that, they’re planning on contacting some Italian labels, to see if it’s better for them to have a distribution with a label, or produce the entire album by themselves. According to Fabio Valentini, they can’t give a release date yet, but he thinks it will not be before September! In my opinion, with a good production, their upcoming full album could be a real surprise for many progressive metal fans. |
