It buzzes with activities in the (ex) Spiritual Beggars camp. First we had the excellent third album of Grand Magus ‘Wolf’s Return’ (with as vocalist JB who sings in the Spiritual Beggars now), on the 20th of June the new Spiritual Beggars album ‘Demons’ sees the light and right now it is time to set our sights on Kayser. Kayser is the new band of ex Spiritual Beggars vocalist/bassist Spice. After leaving the successful Swedish band, he founded a new band in early June 2004 with Mattias Svensson (The Defaced), Bob Ruben (ex Mushroom River Band) and Fredrik Finnander (ex Aeon). Slayer meets Spiritual Beggars, one headlines, and actually they did not exaggerate. Since this CD entered my CD player, it is hard to take it out again. That contagious, that genial, that groovy! And actually, none of the above mentioned bands still plays stoner rock these days. But they are real busters, all three! ‘Kaiserhof’, for that is the name of Kayser’s debut album, starts with a sturdy Slayer speed. Thrash riffs and shouting vocals indeed remind me of the mighty Slayer and this is tenable for the second track ‘Lost Cause’ as well. Two compact tornados taking everyone by storm. But then… the band offers us an irresistible melody that immediately settles in your brain. ‘Good Citizen’ is an instant charm offensive with its shaggy, yet ‘led away’ vocals. Here the spirit of Spice’s old band still reigns. That ravishing, almost seductive aura around the vocals is very present all album long, because Spice is and remains a vocalist with a sandpaper throat where you become warm of. No grunts, yet damned pithy and rough. Another item to enjoy on ‘Kaiserhof’ is the flashing guitar-work, which is most conspicuous in tracks like ‘Noble Is Your Blood’ and ‘Cemented Lies’. The stowing rhythms connected with the masterly voice make ‘7 Days To Sink’ another stunner. Riffs sound like riffs should sound: chunky and overwhelming. In ‘Like A Drunk Christ’ these bone hard riffs are accompanied by an oriental melody in the soloing and it is a combination that rules! In other songs we got more Slayer influences. But Kayser adds a clear personal touch, taking care of more catchiness and melody. The empire of the intrepid emperor (‘kayser’) is founded and its glory will echo all over the world! |
