Greek guitarist/keyboard player Bob Katsionis is the driving force behind Imaginery, a band that has developed out of earlier projects Mirage and Secrets Keeper. The first album, “Oceans Divide”, was released back in 2001, featuring vocals by Luis Hatzimichalis, drums by Kostas Tsobanos and bass by Telis Kafkas. After that, Katsionis was involved in lots of other projects (Nightfall, Septic Flesh). He never abandoned Imaginery, though, and he brought in Swedish singer Björn Jansson (Tears Of Anger) and some other new musicians to record this second album. The first couple of tracks could have been from one of the more recent Yngwie Malmsteen albums. Typical, neoclassical metal, pretty heavy, well executed, but without much inspiration. The next few songs are more progressive, à la ARK or Symphony X, with some very good passages, but again, too few too really grab me. They redeem themselves with “Korozon (The Lord Of Evil)” and “Peace Of Mind”, the two real standout tracks on the album. But “Blind Eyes” is pretty poor, as is the bonus track “Dark Angel”, which goes in power metal overdrive and is at times very irritating (listen to that horrible drum sound), despite the nice Gregg Giuffria-like keyboard solo. This is one of those albums that are not bad, but deliver too few noteworthy moments to really impress. |
