Ritchie Kotzen (Poison, Mr. Big) is a bit of a musical chameleon. He’s tried his hand at heavy rock, glam, melodic rock and funk, among others, and he seems to be feeling at home in every one of these styles. With his newest project, Forty Deuce - with the oddly named Taka (guitar), Ari (Bass) and Tr3e (drums) - he has chosen the path of a modern kind of hard rock. I must admit to being a bit allergic to everything that sounds too modern, and the first time I listened to this, I wasn’t terribly impressed. But I have to say songs like “Oh My God (I Fucked Up Again)”, “I Still”, “Complicated” and “Next To Me”, are really very catchy: raw, powerful rockers with irresistible melodies. The power ballads “Heaven” and especially “Standing In The Rain” are also excellent. Kotzen really has a great, raw voice, and his (and Taka’s) guitar playing is superb. Not all songs are equally good, of course; I could have done without songs like “Start It Up” and “Stand Up”. Still, this album is a nice surprise for me, and I ended up liking it quite a lot. Good one from Mr. Kotzen. |
