Don’t get me wrong; I have nothing against retro bands. In fact, in the year or so I have been reviewing for this site, I’ve come across some excellent bands who manage to delve back into a classic sound, while still sounding fresh and interesting. But they can’t all be winners, and I’m afraid Doctor Dunbar’s Medicine Band just doesn’t cut it. This album contains a kind of rock that is deeply rooted in the 60’s and early 70’s (The Who in particular comes to mind), with a heavy emphasis on the Keith Moon-like drums. Some of the songs are ok. “The Lucky Strike”, “My One True Love” (with a Jimi Hendrix-like riff) and “Need To Get” are even pretty catchy. But then there are also those utterly forgettable tracks like “Tennis Shoes”, “Good Bye Song” and “Rock Your World”. This album doesn’t just sound old; it sounds bad. I just don’t see how a band like this can be relevant these days, except for the fact that the band members are probably having the time of their life playing this music. And so they should, of course… |
