Now here’s something of an impossible task. Diving For Pearls released their first and only album way back in 1989. A bomb, that’s what it was – one of the finest AOR records ever -  and certain to be in any AOR fan’s top 10. So, here you are, 16 years later, and you want your new album to live up to the legend your first album has become. Surely a hopeless mission…

That’s where’s “Texas” comes in. Singer Danny Malone and producer David Prater (Santana, Dream Theater), joined forces again to record this follow-up. It caused something of a shock in the world of AOR when the news was announced, but it would still be quite a while before it was finally released.

The expectations were very high – probably too high. Quite a lot of fans have expressed their disappointment in the new material. And indeed, songs like “Baby Come Down”, “The Colours Show” and “Lonely Is The Dark” are not really worthy of the Diving For Pearls name – they are definitely not bad songs, but they do sound a lot more modern – and very often that is not a good thing. They sound a bit cold in my opinion, too. Still, there are more than enough excellent songs which wouldn’t have been out of place on the debut: the powerful opener “Thinking About Things That Will Never Be”, “Heaven Only Knows” and especially the superb ballads “Stop The World From Turning” and “The Truth Is”. And of course Danny Malone still has an extraordinary voice.

If you resurrect a legend, you have to deliver. “Texas” doesn’t quite live up to that, and it was written in the stars that a lot of fans would feel let down. Still, if you disconnect this new album from the mythical status of the debut, you’ll be able to appreciate it in its own right. A fine piece of music, that much is certain.
