When Schmier and Mike founded Destruction in the early eighties with the intention to make a lot of noise, the world was unaware of the phenomenon ‘thrash metal’. The South West German band achieved a cult-status by a limited but fanatic number of followers with LP’s as ‘Infernal Overkill’ and ‘Eternal Devastation’. They toured intensively with Rage and Kreator, to name a few, until the curtain fell in 1989. Schmier was incidentally active with his hobby band Headhunter, but he also focused on his culinary talents, while Mike continued keeping the Destruction flame burning. Ten years later, in 1999, both friends/musicians decided to work together again under the moniker Destruction. In the new millennium the band released a number of new albums with their familiar style, but served with a better production. In the meantime, they have influenced a generation of musicians and they are considered as the roots of a genre called thrash metal. ‘Inventor Of Evil’ is, just like its predecessor ‘Metal Discharge’ produced by Peter Tägtgren at the Abyss Studio in Sweden and offers us a full-blooded bold as brass sound where tight riffs and ditto rhythms thrive in a glorious way. One can hear that the band is appreciated internationally in ‘The Alliance Of Hellhoundz’. Presented as a new ‘thrash anthem’, starring no less than ten metal singers (amongst them Messiah of Candlemass and Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir) for more tolerance and unity in the scene. New drummer Marc is doing a great job all album long, Mike’s guitar eruptions grow more innovative every time and the smart biting voice and snoring bass of maestro Schmier needs no further introduction I suppose. While Destruction preponderant detains its famous formula, one can speak of some slightly new sounds. The hectic style of the band has gained some depth through the years and in a song like ‘The Calm Before The Storm’ Schmier’s vocals even remind me a bit of Alice Cooper. ‘Inventor Of Evil’ has become an album which will not only appeal to the hard core of fans of the band, but by its marvellous production and ditto compositions it can be considered as recommended stuff for every fan of the heavy side of metal. Swallow the bait and have a good time! |
