The definition of what exactly a promo is, differs quite a lot. In
the most basic form, we get a cd-r copy with a written note; at
other times the items can be very luxurious. The latter is the case
with Broken’s debut full CD “Haoma”. Packaged in a deluxe
glossy folder, with an extended biography, press reports and lyrics
printed on quality paper, and a large-format photograph of the band,
this is definitely the nicest promo I have ever received. Anything
to keep the reviewers happy, eh?

Fortunately, for us, reviewers, the only thing that counts is the
music, and that is all that Broken really needs to promote
themselves. With music that sounds like a combination of Tool
and The Cure, “Haoma” can best be described as a heavier
version of
VAST. The music is intense, dark, mysterious, melodic and
pretty heavy at times. Nick Barounis has a nice, smooth voice; he
always sounds very emotional without getting pathetic. The heavy
aspects are mainly generated by the powerful guitar riffs. The
lyrics are often dark and biting, exposing some raw emotions; the
music backs them up perfectly. This album was recorded over a period
of a couple of years, but still sounds remarkably cohesive. My
favourites are “Septem”, “Jade” and of course the mesmerizing
”Hyacinth”.
