Philip Bardowell may not be the best known name in the world of music, he has proved his quality as a more than able replacement for both Mark Free and Kelly Hansen (now in Foreigner) as the lead singer for Unruly Child. He also fronted bands like Magdalen, Criss (the Kiss drummer’s solo band) and even the Beach Boys, as a replacement for Carl Wilson. On this, his second solo release, the songs are provided by some of the best songwriters in the AOR field: Mark Spiro, Stan Bush, Curt Cuomo, Bobby Barth and Jim Peterik, among others. And excellent songs they are, although the best one may be “She Will Never Know”, one of only two compositions by the singer himself. “Through My Eyes” is a typical Mark Spiro song, and the Stan Bush tracks “Heart Is A Hero” and “I Gotta Believe” (both about as vintage 80’s as you can get), are also first-rate. The two Jim Peterik-penned tracks, “Dreamin’ With My Eyes Wide Open” and “Voices Of The Heart” are highlights as well, and understandably have that Survivor flavour. The latter, a brilliant ballad, also reminds me of some of the best work of Giant. Although Bardowell’s great vocals and the excellent songwriting are of course the focal points on this album, much of the credit for the sound has to go to Tommy Denander (Radioactive), who not only produced this “In The Cut”, but also played all guitars, bass and keyboards – and did an excellent job on all accounts. The album could have done with some more uptempo rockers, and perhaps one or other indication that this was indeed recorded in the 2000’s and not in the 80’s. But you can’t fault anything that is on this album, and AOR fans will absolutely love it, I’m sure.
