Plackband and Mangala Vallis
PLACKBAND AND MANGALA VALLIS ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 3rd in HET KASTEEL IN
ALPHEN AAN DE RIJN IN HOLLAND
AND ON OCTOBER 4th AND 5th IN THE SPIRIT OF 66 IN VERVIERS IN BELGIUM.
The band PLACKBAND from Holland and the Italian MANGALA VALLIS perform
together on Friday October 3rd in Het Kasteel in Alphen a/d Rijn in
Holland. It’s already the fourth time they give a gig together in
Holland.
For PLACKBAND, that released their debut album “After The Battle” last
year, it will be the first show with their new singer Karel
Messemaker, who’s following in the threads of Kees Bik, who left the
band for personal reasons. The new vocalist has already played with
the guitarist and keyboard player of Plackband. In 1995 they played
together with Edwin Wernke from For Absent Friends in the successful
band November. Karel gives the band a lot of opportunities to expand
the repertoire.
You will certainly get a taster in Het Kasteel.

Plackband with their new singer Karel
MANGALA VALLIS has already performed three times in Holland and the
critics were very positive.
The band will play tracks of their first album “Book Of Dreams” but
they will also try out some newer material.
They are recording their new album right now.
Both bands are travelling to Belgium the day after to perform at the
prestigious festival Progresiste in The Spirit Of 66 in Verviers.

IQ-J
A
few words from John Jowitt:
On
14th October I will be travelling to Tokyo to see the Japanese IQ
tribute band, IQ-J. Earlier this year, each member of IQ received a CD
of the band playing live, and good fun it was too! All of the
musicians are tip top quality, playing in their own bands in Japan as
well (Azoth and Cinderella Search).
I’ve been speaking to Tomoo Homma from Tokyo; Since I’m never going to
play a gig at the Birmingham Odeon (now a cinema multiplex), my next
ambition is to go to Japan, and seeing IQ-J is one way of fulfilling
this. With me will be Mark Westwood, Laurence Dyer and Martin Ogden
from IQ’s crew, so a good time should be had by all!
IQ-J are playing at the Silver Elephant in Tokyo on the 18th October,
and I’ll let you know how we go!
JJ-J

IIf
all goes well John and Mark might well joing IQ-J on stage for a
couple of IQ and Dirtbox tunes.

Frameshift
FRAMESHIFT PROJECT FEATURING JAMES LABRIE OF DREAM THEATER TO BE
RELEASED IN OCTOBER 2003
Frameshift is an exciting new Progressive Rock project written and
produced by Henning Pauly of Chain for James LaBrie, vocalist of the
legendary progmetal band Dream Theater. "Unweaving the rainbow"
features 80 minutes of modern progressive rock based on the books on
evolution by Richard Dawkins. Every song deals with a different
evolutionary concept. The approach to writing the music was slightly
different than most progressive rock projects out there.

Composer Henning Pauly has worked in a wide variety of styles. Shortly
before he started working on Frameshift he wrote a film score and
suddenly it clicked. Modern film music combines elements from a lot of
different styles. They are a mix of metal, ambient, techno,
orchestral, rock, pop, loop based music. The way these elements come
together in a film score lends itself perfectly to the genre of
progressive rock so Henning decided to use this approach for
Frameshift. He did not want to limit the music on this album to what
is possible with a rock band lineup, but to what is possible with the
tools a film composer has at his disposal. This didn't mean that he
would forget about all the elements that make progressive rock what it
is, he would simply take a slightly different approach to arranging
it.
Knowing that James LaBrie would be singing the whole album, he wanted
to offer this outstanding vocalist an opportunity to sing in ways he
has not performed before. James is a huge Queen fan and Henning
frequently uses large vocal arrangements in his songs. The plan was
simply: Leave a lot of space for vocals, make them the most important
element on the album. So the songs were written with several a capella
parts and even some counterpoint passages in the tradition of Gentle
Giant and Spock's Beard, which both Henning and James are big fans of.
The album features modern studio recording techniques, fused with lush
orchestration and diverse instruments such as Warr Guitar and Chapman
Stick. "Unweaving the Rainbow" by Frameshift will be available
worldwide in early November 2003. Audio samples, pictures and more
information on the project can be found at

Magenta
Message from Magenta:
Are you all sitting down? Here is the big news........ Rhys Jones
the drummer in Magenta for the past year has LEFT the band. The split
has been totally amicable. He is in another band as well and our
schedules were starting to clash so Rhys decided that he couldn't give
the time Magenta deserved and left. We wish him all the success with
his current band and thank him for a great year of gigging and I know
that all you out there wish him the best as well. Cheers Rhys and see
you when our paths cross on the road.

Allen Mason-Jones
We
are very happy and proud to announce the new drummer in Magenta is
Allan Mason-Jones. He has played with Matthew before in Unbroken
Spirit back in the mid 90's and we have been rehearsing with him now
for the past 4 weeks. Allan is a great drummer and a great soul and
his joining the band has been a smooth one and thoroughly enjoyable
experience. We have the set learnt now and we are ready to rock.
Magenta's first gig with Allan will be at the
Spirit Of 66 in Belgium
on
the 4th October (Allan's Birthday, how cool is that?). We hope you
will make him feel welcome, which I am sure you will. This is a new
chapter in the Magenta story and I promise you that this new era
Magenta will be bigger and stronger and deliver some of the best live
shows you will ever see.
Cheers,
Rob Reed
A
short biography of Magenta:
Rob
Reed's first band, CYAN was formed in 1984 while he was still at
school. They took their influences from Genesis, Mike Oldfield and It
Bites, but split up after a few gigs and one demo tape release. In
1991 Rob re-recorded the five original Cyan tracks in his own studio,
playing all the instruments and singing himself. The tracks attracted
the interest of the now defunct Dutch Progressive Rock label SI Music,
so in 1993 Rob recorded three more new tracks and all were released on
CD under the title of " For King & Country."
Rob met Nigel Voyle whilst recording the second Cyan CD "Pictures From
The Other Side" and he took over lead vocals for that recording.
Christina was a guest on this, singing backing vocals. Rob Reed then
produced and played keyboards on the debut CD by the "Fyreworks" that
attracted the interests of "F2 Music" who eventually signed the band.
The
demise of SI Music took the project to the next stage. F2 Music asked
Rob Reed if Cyan would like to sign to them. Rob was impressed with
their dedication to music and was happy to sign to the label,
releasing a third Cyan CD called "The Creeping Vine"
that sold extremely well and featured Christina on backing vocals
again.
As
well as Rob's work in the field of Progressive Rock, Rob has also
formed many bands covering many different styles, although their
styles were sometimes hard to describe! The most successful of these
bands was called "TRIPPA". Described as ‘a contemporary
Eurhythmics for the new millennium mixing their own brand of edgy
industrial pop with soaring orchestral arrangements. The band has
Christina on vocals and Rob plays guitars and keyboards. They are
joined by couple of other musicians on drums and backing vocals. They
have so far released one single that was voted ‘Record of the Week’ on
Virgin Radio, and have also appeared on TV a number of times. It was
during this time that Rob decided that Christina has the perfect
voice to sing lead vocals on a future Progressive Rock project. The
initial ideas for "MAGENTA" were formed then.

Rob
then worked with a new signing to F2 Music called "Erasmus",
producing the CD and then started the writing of an album that was to
become the debut Magenta release "Revolutions".
Rob wanted to do something new, something bigger and more conceptual.
"Current Prog bands were always scared and shy about admitting
influences of the great bands of the 70’s and I wanted to come clean
and admit and celebrate these influences and hopefully create
something as worthwhile as these classic," said Rob. Clearly he has
done so. How? "To do this, all I had to do was to give priority to
melody rather than technical showmanship, something I have always
tried to do with all my work although many current Prog bands seem to
forget about it."

Jadis DVD
Message from Jadis:
Just a quick update of the jadis website. We have just finished the
mixing of the forthcoming Jadis DVD. It is called 'View From Above'
and it was filmed when the band went to Poland back in April. It
features an hour long live concert in Krakow, an interview with Gary
and Martin, an archive performance of 'Holding Your Breath' from '94,
a short film from the 'Fanatic Tour', and an extensive photo gallery.
There is also a 5.1 surround sound mix.

Although it is not available to order yet we are hoping that we will
have copies by the end of the summer.
Also Gary has unearthed 35 copies of Somersault from his attic, so for
a short time this is back on the merchandise list.
The special edition digipak version of Fanatic is still available,
this features the bonus track 'The Flame Is Burning Out' and an
extended booklet. Also we've added some more reviews of the album on
the site.
The band have also organised a London gig during November, more news
about that on the tour page of the Jadis site.
